Why should you add more whimsy to your life?
- “From a neuroscience perspective, whimsy helps the brain shift out of constant stress mode (high beta brainwaves),” says Oliver. “Novelty and play activate dopamine and signal safety to the nervous system, which improves mood, creativity, and emotional regulation.”[24]
- “From a cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT) lens, whimsy challenges rigid thought patterns like ‘life has to be serious to be productive’ or ‘joy has to be earned,’” continues Oliver. “These beliefs frequently keep people stuck in chronic stress. Introducing lightness, nothing too complicated, helps create cognitive flexibility and reduces emotional overload.”[25]
