Do you want to hide some of your text on Facebook Messenger because it might be considered a spoiler? While there’s currently no official spoiler feature on Messenger, you can work around this issue by using the gift effect to hide your messages. This wikiHow article teaches you how to add a spoiler warning in Facebook Messenger on your Android, iPhone, or iPad.
The Easiest Way to Hide Texts in Messenger (Spoiler)
- Type your message, tap the search icon, and then tap the gift icon. This will hide your message inside a virtual gift box.
- This only works if you and your recipient are both using the mobile app.
- Some users may have access to an experimental spoiler feature, but this method isn’t reliable.
Steps
-
Open a conversation where you want to send a hidden text. Since the Facebook website can't add effects to messages, you'll need to use the mobile app on your Android, iPhone, or iPad. The Gift effect is a great alternative to the Spoiler feature because it hides the text until the other person taps it.
-
Type your text. Tap the text field at the bottom of the screen and use the on-screen keyboard to write your text.Advertisement
-
Tap the wrapped gift icon. You'll see it under the Send effects header. You may need to scroll down or right to find it.[1]
- Note that tapping this will immediately hide the entire message inside the gift-wrapped icon, and the other person won't see the message until they tap it.
- If the person you're sending the message to is on a computer, they will see the message immediately, followed by (sent with gift wrap effect). Your message will only be hidden if they view it in the mobile Messenger app.
-
Open a chat in Facebook Messenger. Facebook experimented with adding a spoiler effect to Messenger, but it’s unclear if this option was ever made available to all users. If you’re one of the users who had access to this experimental feature, you might still be able to access it through the Messenger mobile app on your Android, iPhone, or iPad.
- If you aren't able to add a spoiler with this method, the Gift effect is a great workaround!
-
Type your text. Tap the text field at the bottom of the screen and use the on-screen keyboard to write your text.
-
Select the text you want to add a spoiler to. Formatting options will appear above the highlighted text.
-
Tap ⋮. You'll see this three-dot icon to the right of the pop-up menu.
-
Tap Spoiler. If you don't see this option, the feature is not available to you. If it's there, tap it to add a spoiler to the selected text.
-
Send your message. Once the other person receives your message, they can tap the spoilered text to reveal the hidden message.

If you don’t like the options available in Messenger, there are a variety of other messaging apps that offer spoiler effects. For example, use Discord instead to censor and hide your messages. If you have an iPhone or iPad, you can spoiler your texts with the built-in Invisible Ink effect. Thanks
