Your Guide to Anime Femboys

What is a femboy?
“Femboy” is a mashup of “feminine” and “boy,” and it means exactly what you think it means. That is, it’s used to describe a feminine boy! Often, though, it describes boys who are so feminine that they’re often mistaken for girls.

Are femboys LGBTQ?
Not necessarily! Some femboys do have a trans identity, but not always, and being a femboy is different from being gay or trans. For the most part, it’s just a way for people to play with traditional gender roles and stereotypes.

Are some femboys straight?
Totally! Again, it doesn’t always have to do with someone’s sexuality. Plenty of femboys aren’t gay, and are just straight guys who want to express themselves in feminine ways.

Why are femboys so appealing?
Many people see femboys as appealing or interesting because they play with what we typically think of as gendered stereotypes. There’s a sense of freedom in being a boy but dressing as a girl, or in tailoring your appearance in a way that blurs the line between the genders.

Who is the pink anime femboy?
That’s Astolpho! He’s probably the most famous and popular anime femboy. He’s from the series Fate, where historical figures are summoned in various forms to fight for the Holy Grail, which grants the winner a single wish. He’s based on one of the 12 Paladins of Charlemagne, a Roman emperor.

Why are there so many femboys in anime?
That’s a complicated question with a complicated answer. Like many countries, Japan has been traditionally pretty conservative when it comes to gender expression. But also like many countries, new (and old) ideas are constantly coming to the surface, and artists and the general public are often fascinated by these ideas. Representations of gender expressions, like in anime, are a way to introduce people to these ideas in a fun and safe environment.

Are femboys a sexual thing?
Sometimes, yes. And while it’s totally cool for femboys to sexualize themselves if they feel comfortable, things get dicier when other people force sexual notions onto femboys, or idealize them as sexual objects rather than people.
