PDF download Download Article

It's a myth that men with blond hair can't rock an amazing beard! Even though a light beard might not show up as well as dark facial hair, as long as you can grow it, you can style it. Read on to check out the best beards for blondes, plus things to consider before pursuing a light bearded look. We'll also share how to dye your beard blonde if it's naturally darker, with beard styling and dyeing tips from a barber, facial hair specialist, hair colorist, and licensed cosmetologist.

Beard Styles for Blondes

Barber Michael DiGregorio recommends an elongated beard with tapered sides to give structure to a light-colored beard. Other options include:

  • Short beard: Short facial hair on the jaw and chin
  • Goatee: Long, slightly pointed facial hair on the chin with shorter hair on the jaw
  • Full beard: Thick facial hair with a connected mustache and sideburns
  • Viking beard: Long hair on the cheeks and chin with braids in the front
  • Stubble: 5 o'clock shadow from 1-2 days of hair growth
  • Faded beard: Shorter hair on the cheeks fading into thicker hair on the jaw and chin
  • Power beard: A full beard with thicker hair on the front

Best Blonde Beard Styles

  1. A short beard will always be a timeless look for blondes! This style hugs your chin, jaw, and cheeks in an even layer. It's neat, trim, and versatile, whether you're working in a corporate office or laboring at a job site. It's also a great option for warmer weather.

  2. A blond goatee is a stylish choice, especially if your beard is light or white blond. This style extends your beard further down from your chin in a slight point. Long goatees can reach as far as your neck! Pair the goatee with a soul patch below your bottom lip, a mustache, and a chin strap beard. Alternatively, forgo hair on your cheeks and keep your facial hair concentrated in the center of your face, below your nose.

  3. If your blonde facial hair tends to grow in thick and voluminous, this rugged style might suit you perfectly! A full beard is medium length, or about ½-2 in (2-5cm) long.[2] It covers your entire chin and connects to your sideburns on either side of your face, and is usually paired with a thick, connected mustache, as well.
  4. If you're willing to put a little bit more effort into a long beard style, the Viking beard looks fantastic with blonde hair. A Viking beard tends to be longer in the front than a full beard, extending about 4–6 in (10–15 cm) from your chin and tapering at the end.[4] Consider growing it long enough to make Viking braids, since that's a key part of this style's signature look.
  5. If you want a beard, but not the upkeep, a 5 o'clock shadow may be just the look for you. This stubble style shows up better if your beard is dirty blonde or strawberry blonde, but it can also look striking in white blonde!
  6. A faded beard is a modern look with shorter layers of hair on the temples and cheeks, and gradually thickening toward the jaw and chin. The darker your blonde hair is, the more noticeable the fade will be, but you'll still look fly in this style, no matter your shade of blonde![5]
  7. The power beard is so named because it conveys masculinity and authority. It's a long style that requires about 4–6 in (10–15 cm) of length, similar to the Viking beard. The front of the beard is fuller and longer than the sides, and connected to the sideburns on the sides of your face.[6]

What to Consider When Choosing a Blonde Beard

PDF download Download Article
  1. 1
Hair color Some men want the blonde beard look, but their hair is naturally a different color. In some cases, the hair on their head is blonde, but their facial hair is dark brown or black, and sometimes white or gray. This usually happens because of genetics, but hormonal shifts and aging can also play a role.[7] If blonde is not your natural color, consider if it will complement the color of the hair on your head, your skin tone, and your eye color before you commit to dyeing it.
  2. 2
Face shape Some beard styles will enhance your face shape more than others, regardless of hair color. Facial hair specialist Marlon Rivas says that a person with a rounded face shape "should wear their beard a little bit tighter… where it grows by the ears." Then they should trim it down "with slightly more of a blend" toward the jawline to minimize the roundness of their cheeks." Rivas adds that people with slimmer face shapes (like oval or diamond) should leave their beard fuller in the cheeks, to add volume.[8]
  3. 3
Growth time Every man's facial hair grows in at a different rate. Rivas says that in a typical 4-week hair growth cycle, it takes only a day or two to grow a layer of stubble. After 2 weeks of hair growth, your facial hair will start to look more even. At 4 weeks, you should have a short beard.[9] For a long beard, like a Viking or a power style, expect to grow it for 6 months to achieve the ideal length.
  4. 4
Facial hair fullness Some men's beards grow in patchy or thin and don't fill in all the way. Whereas others have no trouble growing a thick, full beard. Rivas suggests growing out your facial hair for 2 weeks to see what it looks like.[10] At that point, decide if you should try a beard with more volume, like the full, Viking, or power styles, or something requiring less growth, like the short beard or a short goatee.

How to Groom a Blonde Beard

  1. Licensed cosmetologist Mark LoBiondo recommends letting your beard hair grow longer than you want it before trimming or shaping it. Once it's longer, Rivas suggests trimming areas you don't want to grow long to give your hair a more uniform shape.[12]
    • Aim for balance between the hair on your head and the hair on your face. This may look different for everyone, though! For example, if you’re growing a full beard, you might want to keep the hair on your head shorter on the sides and longer on the top for a nice contrast. Or you might prefer to pair a trimmed beard with shorter hair on your head for a polished look. Don’t be afraid to experiment!
  2. 2
Shave your neck while your beard gets longer. Rivas advises shaving your neck "to maintain a clean, groomed appearance." To do that, look in the mirror, lift your chin, and find the "biggest, deepest curve" around your Adam's apple. Shave below that and let the rest of your facial hair grow as long as you desire.[13]
  3. 3
Shampoo and condition your blonde beard once a week. LoBiondo says you can use the same shampoo and conditioner you use to clean the hair on your head. However, he cautions against using these products on your facial hair more than once per week.[14] Otherwise, your beard could dry out.
  4. 4
Oil and brush your beard. Apply beard oil on your palms (about 3-10 drops) and run it through your beard after every shower. Next, Lobiondo says, "Brush your beard with a detangler brush or boar bristle brush" to remove tangles.[16]

How to Dye Your Beard Blonde

PDF download Download Article
  1. Hair colorist Matt King says that if you're going to dye any hair on your face, "use beard oil first to create a little bit of a barrier between your skin and the color that you're about to put on." Just make sure to get the oil on your skin and not spread it throughout your facial hair, he adds. Otherwise, the oil could affect the color.[17]
  2. King says to dip a comb or a disposable mascara wand into the beard dye, then work it through the hair on your face. (Don't forget your eyebrows!) Then let the dye sit for as long as the instructions on your box of hair dye say.[18]
  3. If you can, King recommends washing the dye off in the shower, since it's easier than leaning over the sink and scooping water into your beard.[19] Pat your face dry with a towel that you don't mind getting dye on.
  4. Hair dye is a harsh chemical, and your skin might be extra sensitive after coming into contact with it. That's why King recommends eschewing your skin routine for 24 hours, to give your skin time to calm down. "A lot of your normal skincare products will actually contain chemicals that could irritate your skin immediately after that sort of abrasive process," says King.[20]
