If you’ve ever heard of the game Bloody Knuckles, you might have wondered if it’s really as bad as it sounds. Actually, it is. This schoolyard game is pretty violent and dangerous, and we don’t endorse it at all. But, if you're curious, we’re here to explain what it is, plus the most common variations.    Bloody Knuckles refers to a game where people hit each other’s fists. In one common version of the game, two people make fists and hold them out with the back of their hands facing up. They then take turns punching each other across the knuckles. The last person to flinch, bleed, or quit is the winner.

   • Bloody Knuckles is an extremely dangerous game. It’s a violent activity that carries the risk of open wounds, broken bones, and permanent scarring.

   Variations of Bloody Knuckles might include coins or a deck of cards. In the coin version of Bloody Knuckles—sometimes called Quarters—multiple people flick a spinning coin to try to keep it upright. If someone flicks the coin and it falls, they have to make a fist and put their knuckles flat down on the table. Another player then shoots the coin as hard as they can into the losing player’s hand. Players lose when they bleed or quit; the last player standing wins.

   • In the card version of Bloody Knuckles, if players lose a hand (the card game can vary), another player hits them on the knuckles with the deck of cards. Players are eliminated if they start bleeding.
   • There’s also a card game called Bloody Knuckles that doesn’t involve violence—the goal is to have the hand with the lowest points.

1. Yes, there’s a high likelihood of injury with the game. Bloody Knuckles involves either punching someone on the knuckles or hitting them with a quarter or deck of cards. It’s an inherently dangerous activity. We do not recommend that anyone play any violent variation of Bloody Knuckles. Injuries may include:

   • Open wounds: The whole point of Bloody Knuckles is to draw blood. Cuts and scrapes can easily become infected, especially if they’re not tended to right away. These infections can become serious and can even result in hospitalization.
   • Bruising and swelling: Being struck repeatedly on the back of the hand can cause the knuckles to become swollen and bruised.
   • Boxer’s fracture: A broken bone in your hand caused by punching something very hard.
