Do you want to change the voice for navigation in Google Maps? It's easy to change the Google Maps voice on your Android device, although the process is a bit indirect on iPhone and iPad. This wikiHow article will guide you through the simple steps to change the voice in Google Maps on your Android, iPhone, or iPad.
Ways to Change the Google Maps Voice
- Change the voice in your Google Maps app via Google Assistant for Android devices.
- You can also change your Google Maps voice to a different language in your Google Maps app on Android.
- Change your iPhone or iPad language to change the language of your Google Maps app.
Steps
Using Google Assistant on Android
-
Say "Hey Google, open Assistant settings." Google Assistant will automatically open the Assistant settings menu. If you'd rather open it without voice commands, open the Google app, tap your profile picture in the upper-right corner, then tap Settings and select Google Assistant.
-
Tap Assistant voice & sounds. This will open a menu with a variety of voices for you to choose from.Advertisement
-
Choose a voice that you like. There are a variety of options, both male and female. Once you've chosen a voice you like, you can close out of the Google Assistant app.[1]
- For your Google Assistant voice to work in Google Maps, your Google Maps voice must be set to "default." If you've never changed your Google Maps voice, it will already be set to default. If you'd like to check, use the steps below to change it.
- A recent update caused the Google Assistant voice to not work properly in Google Maps for some users. If this is happening to you, jump to our troubleshooting section below.
Changing Language on Android
-
Tap your profile icon in Google Maps. It's in the top left corner of the Maps app, next to the search bar.
-
Tap Settings. This option is near the bottom of the menu, next to an icon of a gear.
-
Tap Navigation. You'll need to scroll down to find this option near the bottom of the menu.
-
Tap Voice selection. This is below the "Guidance volume" section and will open a pop-up window.
-
Select a voice. The suggested voices won't change your experience too much and are region-specific, meaning that the language will use terminology that other regions don't. For example, English (US) and English (UK) both speak English, but in different accents and with different terms.[2]
- If you're using a Google Assistant voice, your Google Maps voice must be set to default.
iPhone or iPad
-
Open the Settings app on your iPhone or iPad. If you want to hear a different language or accent in Google Maps, you'll have to change the language on your iPhone or iPad. If you don't mind switching your language settings for all of your apps, open your Settings now.
- Unfortunately, the Google Maps app does not allow you to change your voice on your iPhone or iPad unless you change your language or region.
- If you want more voice options for navigation, consider using Apple Maps instead. Apple Maps uses Siri to guide you, and you can easily change Siri's voice.[3]
-
Tap General. It has an icon of a gear.
-
Tap Language & Region. You'll see this near the bottom of the menu.[4]
-
Tap Add Language…. This will open a new window with a list of languages.
-
Tap a language. You will be prompted if you want to change your primary language to the new language you selected. Tap the button that has your new language. For example, if your current default language is "English (US)" and you choose "Deutsch (Schweiz)", you'll tap the Deutsch (Schweiz) button when prompted to select a primary language.
- Changing your phone's default language will also change the voices in most of your apps, including Google Maps.
