Whether all your friends are asking for your username and you are tired of saying "I don't have Discord", or you want to join your school's gaming community, or something else entirely, you may be wondering how to ask your parents for Discord. With the steps listed in this article, hopefully you will have your account opened soon!

  1. Be responsible. One of the concerns that your parents may have about letting you have Discord is your responsibility. Discord is one of the more popular social media platforms among teenagers, known for its potential dangers. Dangerous groups like "Group 764" have made headlines in recent years, raising concerns amongst parents about what their children have been engaging in online.[1]
    • You can prove responsibility by doing your chores, getting good grades, and behaving on other social media platforms you have.
  2. Brainstorm solutions to possible concerns. Your parents likely have concerns about letting you have access to Discord (or social media in general). Think about concerns you think they might have before you ask them, and then brainstorm solutions to those problems. Below are some example concerns and their solutions.
    • "You will become addicted" can be solved with "I will set a 1-hour limit per day".
    • "Discord isn't safe" can be countered with "I will only talk to people whom I know in real life".

Find a good time to ask. Asking your parents for Discord while they are dealing with something stressful (like work or drama) will probably end with an instant "no" without any consideration. Instead, wait for a good time to ask, like after dinner, or right after a good grade.
    • Just because your parents don't look stressed doesn't mean they aren't. Take this into account when you decide to ask.
  4. Explain why you want Discord, and listen to their concerns. Present them with the solutions you brainstormed earlier in a respectful way. Don't talk over them, or get angry if they say no.
    • Remember that you have to be 13 or older to get Discord. If you are younger than this, your parents will probably say no, regardless of their other concerns.[2]
    • In some countries, this limit may be higher.[3]
  5. Compromise with your parents. If your parents say no, try to compromise with them. Ask them why they said no, and think of a compromise. If they said no because of safety, tell them that you will only talk to people you know in real life. If they are concerned that you will become addicted, say that you will set a 1-hour limit a day.
    • Accept any compromises they suggest, too. If they allow you to have Discord, but on the condition that they must have your account details, agree. You can renegotiate compromises later once you have built more trust.
  6. Hopefully, your parents said yes right away, but the more likely scenario is that they either said "I'll think about it" or "No". Wait at least a week before asking them again. As you did when you initially asked them, don't ask them again if they are visibly stressed. Remember to be patient; your parents may be impressed by your patience in waiting for their decision.
    • If they keep saying "I'll think about it" every time you ask, it is probably a metaphor for "no".
  7. Many parents are not familiar with how the app works, and this is probably contributing to their being discomfort with it. Take the time to sit down with them and explain how Servers and Direct Messages work. Explain that you can set your account to "private", meaning that people cannot add you as a friend; you have to add them.

Stay away from dangerous communities. Like all online platforms, Discord has its fair share of dangerous communities. The most well-known and prominent one is "764", who are a neo-Nazi satanic cult, designated as a terrorist group by the United States, engaging in sextortion with minors, among other things.[4] Other servers labeled as "anti-degen" are also harmful, and many of these servers endorse pedophilia, hate speech, and Nazism. Tell them that if you come across one of these servers, you will report it to Discord Support.
  9. 9
Show them the safety features. Like most social media platforms, Discord has a range of safety features that may make your parents less concerned about it. By default, Discord will automatically censor NSFW content, and disabling this feature requires you to prove that you are 18 or older. Accessing servers and channels marked as NSFW also requires age verification. Most safety features, particularly ones relating to NSFW content, are enabled by default and require age verification to disable.[5]
  10. 10
Don't be disrespectful if they say no. Despite your best efforts, your parents may not allow you to have Discord. If this happens, tell them that while you are not happy with their decision, you understand why and will respect it. Don't throw a tantrum, don't call them names, and don't go behind their back and create an account anyway.
    • Your parents might be impressed by your maturity in handling the situation, which may convince them to change their mind.
