Yu-Gi-Oh fans: ready for a trip down memory lane? With the sheer number of Yu-Gi-Oh cards out there today, it’s hard to narrow down the greatest “icons” out of the bunch—but we’ve done just that! In this article, wikiHow partnered with a Yu-Gi-Oh expert to take a look at some of the coolest classic Yu-Gi-Oh cards that are still remembered fondly. If you played the game back in the day, you might recall some of them, too. Either way, let’s dive into this comprehensive list of 25 Yu-Gi-Oh cards with incredibly cool effects and powers (and why exactly they’re so great)!

Blue-Eyes White Dragon

PDF download Download Article
  1. According to Wu, Blue-Eyes White Dragon is one of the coolest and most iconic cards in Yu-Gi-Oh.[1] Plus, its powers make it practically invincible! Blue-Eyes White Dragon is a card with 3,000 ATK (attack points) capable of absolutely demolishing most others, and its deck comes with some invaluable support cards that make it easier to summon in battle. And, of course, the card’s striking design also contributes to its cool factor.[2]
    • Card type: Monster (Dragon/Normal)
    • Level: 8

Exodia the Forbidden One

PDF download Download Article
  1. Exodia the Forbidden One is a super cool and iconic Yu-Gi-Oh card, says Wu.[4] This is largely because, very simply, it’s a game-winning card (but only under specific conditions). Basically, a player with Exodia plus the four arms and legs of the Forbidden One in their hand can win the whole duel. The drawback is that you can’t depend on getting all five cards to win the duel automatically…but it’s thrilling when it happens!
    • Card type: Monster (Spellcaster/Effect)
    • Level: 3

Summoned Skull

PDF download Download Article
  1. According to Wu, Summoned Skull is a cool and old-school card.[5] It has a really distinct, striking design with its skeletal figure, demonic blue wings, and purple innards visible under the bone. Plus, the Summoned Skull has a pretty strong ATK (2,500) yet only six stars—which means it can be summoned for less, yet matches the power of other iconic cards like the Dark Magician. That makes the Summoned Skull a great choice when you need some support monsters in your deck.
    • Card type: Monster (Fiend/Normal)
    • Level: 6

Dark Magician

PDF download Download Article
  1. The Dark Magician card definitely has a “cool” factor, says Wu.[6] Its coolness comes from the anime series, where it was used to triumph over an impressive array of enemies with its attack and defensive abilities. So, even though the Dark Magician certainly doesn’t have the highest ATK or Defense rating out of all the different cards out there, it’s proven to be a formidable one nonetheless.[7]
    • Card type: Monster (Spellcaster/Normal)
    • Level: 7
    • Honorable mentions: Wu says some other cool but less powerful monster cards include Celtic Guardian, Time Wizard, Curse of Dragon, Harpie Lady, Baby Dragon, Kuriboh, Shapesnatch, Petit Dragon, Man-Eater Bug, Penguin Soldier, Muka Muka, Mr. Volcano, Marshmallon, and Spirit Reaper.[8]
7

Pot of Greed

PDF download Download Article
  1. According to Wu, Pot of Greed is a cool and old-school spell card.[9] It’s beloved (and feared) among Yu-Gi-Oh players for its simple purpose: playing it lets a duelist draw two new cards and add them to their hands. Why is this so great? Well, that’s because playing a Pot of Greed has the potential to result in players drawing some very powerful and valuable cards from their deck, without needing to get rid of any others. As we’ve already said: it’s a simple play, but a game-changing one![10]
    • Card type: Spell
    • Level: N/A (not a monster)
    • Honorable mentions: Wu says some other cool and old-school spell cards include Graceful Charity, Cold Wave, Card Destruction, Heavy Storm, Giant Trunade, Change of Heart, Snatch Steal, Harpie's Feather Duster, Card of Safe Return, Mirage of Nightmare, Premature Burial, Confiscation, Delinquent Duo, Painful Choice, and Forceful Sentry.[11]

Monster Reborn

PDF download Download Article
  1. The Monster Reborn card is a cool and powerful old-school spell card, says Wu.[13] It can recall a monster from the player’s Graveyard and summon it into the fight—either their own monster, or one of their opponent’s monsters. It was actually banned in the Yu-Gi-Oh! card game—but, as a seriously rewarding card for players to use, it was later revived on the limited list in 2010. It’s just that neat!
    • Card type: Spell
    • Level: N/A
    • Honorable mentions: According to Wu, some other cool and old-school spell cards include Swords of Revealing Light, Dark Hole, Reinforcement of the Army, Dian Keto the Cure Master, Mystical Space Typhoon, Share the Pain, Nobleman of Crossout, Nobleman of Extermination, Yami, United We Stand, Mage Power, Megamorph, Insect Barrier, Final Countdown, and Exchange.[14]
11

Mirror Force

PDF download Download Article
  1. Mirror Force is a cool and old-school Trap-type card, says Wu.[15] It’s super cool because it can really back an opponent into a corner; using it basically wipes all of their monsters off the table, forcing them to completely rethink their strategy (especially if they were focusing on mostly offensive tactics). Mirror Force won’t work in every situation, but when it’s effective, it’s really effective—so much so that fans keep using it, even though more modern cards have since been issued.
    • Card type: Trap
    • Level: N/A
    • Honorable mentions: Wu says some other cool trap cards include Trap Hole, Dark bribe, Bottomless trap hole, Chain destruction, Jar of Greed, Light of Intervention, Waboku, Acid Trap hole, Burst Breath, Just desserts, Ultimate Offering, Castle Walls, Reinforcements, Fake Trap, Dragon Capture Jar, Dust Tornado, Gamble, Crush Card Virus, Ring of Destruction, Solemn Judgment, Trap Dustshoot, Return from the different dimension, Imperial Order, and Royal Oppression.[16]

  1. Raigeki is another cool spell card, says Wu.[17] It’s from the very first official Yu-Gi-Oh set, alongside some of the other classics on this list like Pot of Greed and Dark Magician. And, like those cards, Raigeki is still notorious. That’s because it has the power to destroy all of the monsters on the opposing side, which is incredibly overpowered! Plus, few cards have been as controversial as Raigeki: over the years, it’s gone from Tournament-Illegal to Banned, and then back to its current “Unlimited” status.[18]
    • Card type: Spell
    • Level: N/A

Great Maju Garzett

PDF download Download Article
  1. Wu agrees that Great Maju Garzett is one of the coolest cards.[19] Its design is delightfully demonic-looking, and its attack power is really impressive. What is it, you ask? That’s the thing: it changes based on the ATK rating of the tributed monster used to summon Garzett. Whatever monster you use, Great Maju Garzett’s ATK is automatically twice that—so, if you use a really great boss-level monster to summon Garzett, that means Garzett will be…well, pretty much a weapon of mass destruction.
    • Card type: Monster (Fiend/Effect)
    • Level: 6
    • Honorable mentions: Wu says some other cool monster cards include Jinzo, Relinquished, Thousand-Eyes Restrict, The Masked Beast, Fortress Whale, Tri-Horned Dragon, Zera the Mant, Machine King, Gate Guardian Magician of Black Chaos, Cyber Jar, Yata-Garasu, and Chaos Emperor Dragon - Envoy of the End.[20]

Black Skull Dragon

PDF download Download Article
  1. The Black Skull Dragon is actually a fusion of two monster cards listed above: Summoned Skull and Red-Eyes Black Dragon. And since those two cards are cool enough to be on this list, this one had to be, too! Black Skull Dragon is treated as an “Archfiend,” with a whopping 3,200 ATK—and it’ll get even stronger with the right Spells or Bonuses in play. Plus, the card’s design is a wicked combination of the Summoned Skull’s bony exoskeleton and Red-Eyes’ spiky, draconic form.
    • Card type: Monster (Dragon/Fusion)
    • Level: 9

Elder Entity Norden

PDF download Download Article
  1. Elder Entity Norden is definitely an unconventional card—not to mention so powerful that it was officially labeled “Forbidden” in the trading card game! Norden can arrive on the battlefield and allow you to immediately perform a Special Summon, targeting a monster of level 4 or lower in your Graveyard. But that’s not the powerful part; Norden’s trick is allowing players to get stronger monsters by repeatedly summoning him and collecting materials for better Special Summons along the way.
    • Card type: Monster (Fairy/Fusion/Effect)
    • Level: 4

Galaxy-Eyes Prime Photon Dragon

PDF download Download Article
  1. This dragon card is probably the coolest because of its artwork: there’s so much going on, but all of it is fun to look at. The dragon itself is a deep blue, with bright neon blue light highlighting its limbs and practically exploding out of it—and then there are the neat galaxy-colored purple, blue, and yellow accents. We didn’t even have to mention the card’s 4,000 ATK until now, because it’s just a really awesome-looking space dragon!
    • Card type: Monster (Dragon/Xyz/Effect)
    • Level: 8

Black Luster Soldier

PDF download Download Article
  1. Black Luster Soldier definitely has a spot on the cool list, says Wu.[23] It has an absolutely out-of-this-world ATK (3,000) and impressive Defense score (2,500). Simply put, it’s one of the strongest cards a duelist can play! Interestingly, the Black Luster Soldier used to be categorized as a Normal Monster before making the change to Ritual Monster in 2004; since then, an entire archetype has been developed based on that one card.
    • Card type: Monster (Warrior/Ritual)
    • Level: 8

Magic Cylinder

PDF download Download Article
  1. Magic Cylinder is another cool trap card. It’s used to block attacks (while dealing damage right back to the opponent). Magic Cylinder is awesome because it’s so versatile; it’s been included in several different Yu-Gi-Oh decks—not to mention player stratagems—because it’s just that indispensable, no matter how you like to play.
    • Card type: Trap
    • Level: N/A
    • Honorable mentions: Wu adds that some other cool trap cards include Last Turn, Time Seal, Robbin' Goblin, Self-Destruct Button, Ring of Destruction, Anti-Spell Fragrance, Royal Decree, Exchange of the Spirit, Call of the Haunted, Widespread Ruin, Mind Crush, Magic Jammer, Judgment of Anubis, Reckless Greed, Trap Stun, Scrap Iron Scarecrow, Sakuretsu Armor, Torrential Tribute, Needle Ceiling, Skill Drain, Spellbinding Circle, Gravity Bind, and Barrel Behind the Door.[24]

Giant Soldier of Stone

PDF download Download Article
  1. Giant Soldier of Stone brings up fond memories for fans of the Yu-Gi-Oh anime, specifically that one battle where Yugi faced off against Mako Tsunami—and Yugi used the Giant Soldier of Stone to smash the moon (as in, a summoned moon from a previous play). If that didn’t already make Giant Soldier of Stone cool in the minds of Yu-Gi-Oh players everywhere, there’s also the fact that its ATK value is pretty high for a card with a level-3 rating.[25]
    • Card type: Monster (Rock/Normal)
    • Level: 3
