Although AI has taken over most of the jobs that used to require lots of expert advice, with Google Gemini's Gem feature, you can continue to have Gemini help you with repeated tasks called Gems. Even though your Google Gemini came with several Gems preinstalled and updated, this article will give you advice to help you create others - helping you tailor your approach to using Google Gemini to suit you!
Steps
-
1Open Google Gemini on your phone, and make sure to log in.
- Gemini's app is an all-white/black icon with a rainbow-colored diamond-shaped gem.
- Make sure to log in. Creating Gems forces you to log in, so Google Gemini knows which app the Gem originally belongs to.
- Any place you create the Gem, you'll be forced to log in.
-
2Open the Gem manager. Tap the hamburger menu at the top, then select the Gems option below. It'll be labeled "Gems" and should be under the "My Stuff" folder/section label, above your (previous) Chats.
- On Android, it’ll be labeled “Explore Gems” instead.

3Look through the (Previous) Gems. Check the All Gems list for possible duplicates using your ideas for the new Gem. Google Gemini opens the Gems list to the All Gems list.
- Skim over both the Title of the Gem and the Summary of what the Gem does.
-
4Tap the Your Gems tab. This is between All Gems and By Google.
-
5Tap the "Gems on the web" link. This link should be in the banner, starting with "To create a new Gem, go to Gems on the web.
- If you choose to go directly to this creation page over a browser (not within the Google Gemini app), make sure to log into your account where your Gem will be placed until your Gem has been saved and readied for your use.
-
6Focus on the Instructions first. They are the "meat and potatoes" of gem-creation.
- Here, you will focus not only on what you want Gemini to know about your much-needed help for others, but what it needs to build on from your potential prompts.
- Google Gemini gives creators examples how the person is a horticulturist and a long background story, but then mentions what it should know, like "take into account location, weather, and what plants are native to the area," then continues with how it's responses should be handled such as under knowledgeable conditions, through chats which are casual and friendly." You will need to create a similar response to this one, based on your specific Gem summary.
- Once you tap or click into the box, the example will disappear unless you remove your text and back away from the page.

- If you need help revising your Gem Instructions, there's a writing pencil button, which uses Google Gemini help to revise the instructions to better suit the Gemini system.
- There's also a back and forward button in the bottom left corner to move backward and ahead of previous large AI revisions.
- Think up a name, and provide it in the Name box. When reviewed and promoted, Google will add it to the list and will boldface it. Keep it simple, and avoid adding "Gem" to the end of the Gem's name, because it's ultimately listed that way with the preinstalled Gems Google Gemini comes with.

-
7Write a description. This is the Description line, which summarizes the Gem, so you know what it's used for. This should be no more than 2 sentences long, though most will be no more than 1 sentence long.
-
8Use Knowledge only in expert conditions, where pictures are necessary to reference.
-
9Preview the Gem. Tap the Preview button to the right of the Editor tab, just below the "Save" button, to see your Gem.
- Look for copyediting issues and glaring errors in thought. Think like the Pros do!
-
10Save your Gem when ready.
- Tap the "Save" button just above the Editor/Preview tab labels on a mobile device.
- This button is found to the right of the New Gem page title, just above the box of Gem preview.
-
11Look for the confirmation page saying "Gem (name) has been created!" You'll need to proceed by clicking "Start Chat", or you can share it with friends, using the Share link appropriately.
