Getting a "Failed - Virus Detected" error while you're trying to download a file is annoying, especially if you know for a fact that the file you're trying to download does not have a virus. This wikiHow will teach you how to disable the "Virus Detected" in Chrome error by turning off Chrome’s built-in safe browsing feature. If that doesn’t work, you may be able to get around the issue by disabling Windows Security (Windows Defender), adjusting your security settings on Mac, or turning off third-party antivirus software.
How to Get Rid of the “Virus Detected” Error
- Turn off Chrome’s virus detection feature by going to ⋮ > Settings > Privacy and security > Security and enabling “No protection (not recommended)”.
- If you’re on a Windows computer, it might help to temporarily disable real-time protection in your computer’s security settings.
- If your Mac blocks an app you downloaded in Chrome, you may be able to use a workaround to open it anyway.
Steps
Disabling Chrome Antivirus
-
Click the ⋮ button at the top right corner of Chrome. If you’re trying to download an app or file that you know is safe, but you keep seeing the “Failed - Virus Detected” error, you may be able to bypass the issue by temporarily disabling Chrome’s built-in virus protection. To get started, click the vertical row of three dots at the top right side of the browser.
- Disabling Chrome’s security features can put your computer at risk of a malware infection. This should be a temporary measure. Don’t do it if you aren’t 100% sure the file you’re downloading is safe.
-
Click Settings. It’s at the bottom of the menu. You may need to scroll down to find it.Advertisement
-
Select Privacy and security. It’s in the left-hand menu bar on the Settings page.
-
Click Security. It’s near the bottom of the section under the Privacy and security header.
-
Select the “No protection” option. You’ll see several options under the Safe Browsing header. Click the radio button next to “No protection (not recommended).” Click Turn Off in the warning that pops up to confirm your selection.
- Try again to download the app or file that triggered the error. If it’s still blocked, proceed to one of the methods below.
- Once you’ve successfully completed your download, return to the Privacy and security > Security menu and turn your browsing protection back on.
Disabling Windows Security
-
Press ⊞ Win and type "Windows security". This will open your Start menu and begin a search for what you're typing.
-
Click the "Windows Security" system settings result. Settings will open a window to the Windows Security suite.[1]
-
Click Virus & threat protection. It has the icon of a shield and is usually the first listing in the menu.
-
Click Manage settings under "Virus & threat protection settings." You should see this option about halfway down the menu, below the Current threats section.[2]
-
Click the switches under "Real-time protection" and “Cloud-delivered protection” to turn them off. You should be able to return to your download and complete it before real-time protection automatically turns back on. If you want to resume using cloud-delivered protection (which helps keep your security as up-to-date as possible at all times), toggle it back on when you’re done.
- You'll most likely need to repeat this process if you have multiple downloads failing due to the "Virus Detected" error.
