Entity 303 Explained

Entity 303 is a fictional Minecraft villain created by YouTuber TheSpeed179. What is Entity 303?

  1. Entity 303 was first created as part of a creepypasta (or fictional scary story) by a player called TheSpeed179. 303 is a powerful villain who has black skin and red eyes, and he wears white clothing, including a hood similar to that worn by the Grim Reaper.[1]
    • Entity 303 is often rumored to be a former Mojang employee who hacks and stalks Minecraft players in revenge for being fired by the game’s creator, Notch. His goal is to ruin Minecraft, ending it for good.
    • Some people believe that 303 works as part of a team of former Mojang employees. Other members of the team include Caveman, Fire Demon, Mask of Death, Mini 303, and Mossy Nightmare.
    • Other names for Entity 303 include John Entity, The New Herobrine, and Ghost of the Red Desert.
  2. 2
According to legend, Entity 303 stalks 1 out of every 40 Minecraft players. 303 is believed to prefer servers with multiple people playing (as opposed to Herobrine, who is said to appear primarily in private single-player worlds).[2] Signs that your world has been hacked by 303 include:
    • Birch wood appearing in an oak tree
    • Cobblestone where it shouldn’t be
    • Upside-down crosses
    • Unexplained figures standing in the distance
    • Lightning striking near you, especially if it isn’t raining
    • Fire appearing in the sky or buildings burning without explanation
    • TNT appearing around buildings without explanation
    • Seeing “Make a wish” appear in the chat
    • Seeing 303 in mysterious file names or in the source code or crash logs

Entity 303 vs. Herobrine

PDF download Download Article
  1. Entity 303 is said to be an enemy of Herobrine. Herobrine was the first fictional entity inspired by Minecraft, frequently appearing in closed, single-player worlds. The Herobrine legend evolved to include tales of him stalking and hurting people (even in real life)—but according to the Entity 303 legend, Herobrine was actually just trying to warn people about Entity 303’s chaotic attempts to take down Minecraft.
    • The Entity 303 story and legends like it are largely inspired by the Herobrine myth, where a mysterious figure appears in a player’s Minecraft game and frightens them.

Entity 303 vs. Entity 404

  1. Entity 404 has white skin or glitchy skin and red eyes, so he looks pretty similar to Entity 303. And like 303, Entity 404 is a villain who’s notorious for crashing players’ games. That said, several legends depict Entity 404 as being much weaker than 303, like in “Dave the Villager 22,” where 303 killed 404 by stabbing him one time.
    • Legends about 404 claim that he’s a neutron star, an ancient Minecraft god, or a villager who ascended to godlike status.

Origin of the Entity 303 Legend

  1. 1
Entity 303 was created in 2013 by YouTuber TheSpeed179. In December 2013, TheSpeed179 posted a video titled “[The New Herobrine (Minecraft Documentary) MUST WATCH!!!].” The video tells the story of Entity 303 appearing in a multiplayer server. After noticing odd fires and TNT around the players’ structures, Speed scanned the game’s source code, where he found unusual entries like MAKEAWISH and the number 303. Shortly afterward, Speed says he was contacted by 303, who then hacked his computer.[3]
    • According to the lore (like on the Minecraft Creepypasta forum), Speed started searching for Entity 303 after receiving an email from a player named Frankie. Frankie claimed that 303 had appeared to him and his friends on a private server. 303 caused the players’ computers and mobile devices to glitch, and some of the players even became unreachable in real life.
    • A later video by Speed titled “[Entity 303 Documentary (Part 4) Herobrine]” claims that Entity 303 was fired by Mojang because they falsely blamed him for hacking players’ accounts as Herobrine. That’s why he hates Herobrine. The person who actually played as Herobrine felt responsible, and that’s why he now tries to warn people about 303.
  2. 2
Other players expanded the lore with their own content. The Entity 303 legend quickly caught on with Minecraft fans. Its popularity was probably boosted because the story was full of familiar touchpoints, like 303 being a former Mojang employee and the connection between Herobrine and Entity 303 made this story especially popular. This led to a variety of creepypastas, videos, and more.
    • Lore emerged that Entity 303’s real identity was John Entity, and that he was an expert hacker who used his technical skills to get revenge on Minecraft after being fired by Mojang.[4]
    • In the Psycho Girl series by MC Jams, Entity 303 is the biological father of the main character, Psycho Girl.
    • Players can download Entity 303 skins, mods, and minigames for Minecraft.

Is Entity 303 real?

  1. TheSpeed179 addressed the truth behind the legend in a video titled “Is Entity 303 Real?” In that video, he claimed that the first story was the result of a friend tricking him. He also wrote a statement in the comments of his original video stating “Entity 303 is fake.”
    • The Entity 303 legend was popular enough to reach Notch, the creator of Minecraft. In a tweet dated July 2014, he stated, “oh god no entity 303 what is wrong with you people its just a game i cant deal with this. Go read a science [sic], people! There are no ghosts!”
    • You can’t summon Entity 303 in a vanilla (un-modified) version of Minecraft, but you may be able to add mods that will create an Entity 303 figure in your world.
