The most popular and efficient option for ripening a whole avocado is to put it in a brown paper bag with a banana or apple. Roll the top of the bag down to close it and wait 12-24 hours. The other fruit will release ethylene gas, which causes avocados to ripen faster than they would sitting out on the counter.

If you’re in a huge rush and quickly need a ripe avocado for a meal you’re making, microwave your avocado for 10 seconds and check the firmness. Continue microwaving the avocado in 10-second intervals until the avocado has reached a texture you’re happy with.

To ripen cut avocados, generously coat the exposed avocado with lemon juice and put the avocado halves back together. Wrap the entire fruit in cling wrap and set it in the fridge for 12-24 hours.
