Many fans say KATSEYE is not considered a K-pop group, and instead are a global girl group. The members of KATSEYE are from all around the globe and they primarily sing in English, unlike K-pop artists who are based in Korea and sing in Korean.
KATSEYE can easily be confused for a K-pop group, though. They're signed to HYBE Entertainment, the label that's known for giving BTS their start. The group members also went through a rigorous K-pop training program to learn how to perform.

This is a really hard question because I think this is very controversial, and I don't think there's a direct yes or no. I would say they're a global girl group, but they were made with the K-Pop formula. So they went through the survival show process, and there's a whole show on this on Netflix called Popstar Academy. They went through the training process, went to Korea, and went through the same classes as K-Pop idols, but they're marketed towards a global audience, and they're based in California. And I think that they don't follow the same strict guidelines as K-Pop because they are allowed to have relationships and they say bad words more openly than regular K-Pop idols. But I would definitely identify them as a global girl group rather than K-Pop.

Katseye came together by joining two companies. It was a collaboration between Hybe, which manages groups like BTS and Enhypen, and Geffen, an American group under Scooter Braun. Their aim was to use the K-Pop structure of training for a certain number of years, having a concept before you debut, and having producers helping to build your image and choreography, and apply it to a Western group.
In so many ways, Katseye is K-Pop adjacent because they're partially under a big K-Pop company. They perform at Korean music shows. They do a lot of collabs with K-Pop artists. Yet in terms of their actual promotions, they promote globally, where K-Pop idols just promote in Korea. K-Pop idols are also incredibly media-trained: they can't date publicly, and they can't say anything political. Katseye, however, can say what they want and be out in the open with their love lives. So to me, they are a logistically a K-Pop group, but socially a Western group.

Yes, as much as I agree with you, Hybe entertainment has brought up katseye as a 'global girl group' as it features many nationalities. despite being trained using a k-pop methodology, they were always ment to be seen as one of the first global girl groups.
