Here are my top 5 favorite movies:
1. Modern Times – It was groundbreaking in its depiction of industrialization and the replacement of manpower by machinery, which is still relevant today. Personally, it resonates because I relate to stories where everything goes wrong but the character just smiles and keeps going.
2. Ikiru – I actually think this might be the best film ever made. It’s about what makes life worth living. A man finds out he’s dying and tries to enjoy his remaining time, only to discover that helping others brings him fulfillment. It’s deeply inspiring.
3. It’s Such a Beautiful Day – An experimental animated film that follows a character losing his memory. I didn’t expect a stick-figure movie to hit that hard emotionally. It’s powerful and surprisingly profound.
4. Before Sunset (and the whole Before trilogy) – I group them as one film, but Before Sunset is my favorite. These films feel like a Rorschach test—you relate to different ones at different stages in life. The dialogue is just so meaningful.
5. Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind – Probably the most well-known of my picks. It’s such a creative and emotional movie. It really hits when you’re going through a breakup and makes you appreciate the memories rather than wishing to erase them. But it also shows how we can be doomed to repeat mistakes.

This is a fantastic question! There are times that I really want to dive into new movies, but worry that if I go in blind, I might end up finding something emotional that might leave me ruminating for a long time. The cornerstone of my answer is to make sure there is a smidge of comedy in the slew of genres.
One of the genres that I feel opens the door to some lightheartedness is action movies that you don't have to take too seriously, and make you giggle. I absolutely love the first RED film with Bruce Willis and Morgan Freeman as a lighthearted and silly watch. Similarly, I deeply enjoy Die Hard as an action film. It has wonderful one-liners, silliness, some heartfelt subject matter, and some iconic action. Here are a few other lighthearted action movies: Edge of Tomorrow, Ready Player One, The Italian Job, Get Smart, and of course the first Transformers movie starring Shia LeBeouf.
I also really enjoy leaning into romantic comedies from the 2000s, whether for a rewatch or a first-time watch. Go-to's for a lighthearted weekend watch would be 13 Going on 30, She's the Man, How to Lose a Guy in 10 days, Miss Congeniality, and Bridget Jones's Diary.
Let me know if you have any specific genres that you want more suggestions for, following this criteria!

I like "Hector and the Search for Happiness." It's fun and adventurous and really heart warming. It's well-acted too.
I also think the 2000s had some really awesome lighthearted but thoughtful and interesting movies with things like Little Miss Sunshine and Scott Pilgrim. On the sillier side, maybe Zombieland and Superbad?
