Board game expert Ashton Wu's favorite 2-player board games include Wingspan, Patchwork, Splendor, Magic: The Gathering, and 7 Wonders Duel. If you like cooperative 2-player board games, he recommends Eldritch Horror, Sky-Team, Lost Cities, and Spirit Island. Sherlock Holmes Consulting Detective, according to Wu, is a great mystery game for 2 people to play through together.
Seven Wonders Duel is one of my all-time favorites. It's an excellent adaptation of the classic Seven Wonders. It works really well for two players. Boop, another game, is super easy to get into, and the complexity of it is based on your partner rather than the game itself. Sky Team, Horrified, and Splendor are also great at two players!

There are many great two-player board games I'd recommend:

- Lost Cities, which is a wonderful card game with simple rules, but it’s all about risk and timing. You're trying to complete sets while preventing your opponent from grabbing valuable cards.
- Patchwork, which is fantastic for couples.
- Onitama, which is like a lighter, shorter version of Chess—very strategic but with rotating moves that level the playing field.
- Fungi is a charming game about foraging mushrooms on a woodland walk, if you want something cozy.
- Sherlock Holmes: Consulting Detective is a story-based game where you work together to solve a mystery by choosing which leads to follow. It’s like cooperative detective work.
There is a couple that I follow online, called Games for Two, and they've actually been featured on several games in Target and Walmart now, based on their social media channel, but they post a ton of 2-player games because it's a husband and wife duo. Anytime I'm looking for a duo game, I go and look up what they've done, and they do a great job with that.
One of the games my wife and I play that she always beats me in is called Blockus. It's a Tetris board game style game where you have to get all the pieces to fit. Card games are huge - there are so many games you can play with a deck of cards, and a lot of times, families already have that in their house. We play a couple of games, Sevens and Spoons. Any dice games are also great.
