Games for Girls

Some popular games for older girls (over 13) include Stardew Valley, Unpacking, and Animal Crossing: New Horizons. Some popular online games for young girls (under 13) include Highlights Kids, National Geographic Kids, and Nickelodeon. However, any game can be a girl's game if a girl wants to play it!

  1. Highlights Kids has a lot of fun games that are great for kids of all ages, but girls might be especially interested in Puzzle Palace and Dance Machine. Beyond games, Highlights Kids has a ton of fun and educational quizzes, crafts, recipes, and more for girls to enjoy.[1]
  2. If your little one is interested in animals, Nat Geo Kids is a great site with a ton of awesome games. Most of the games on the site are puzzles, but there's also a fun Bubble Burst game. Nat Geo Kids also has a ton of fun quizzes—both educational and fun quizzes, like which penguin species you are.[2]

  3. Nickelodeon has had a ton of fun online games for kids for many, many years. If your child loves Nick shows, they can probably find a game on Nickelodeon's website about it! Some fun options include Peppa Pig Hide 'n Seek, Pet Parlor Rescue, and Snow Slide.[3]
  4. Another safe, fun, and educational option for online games for girls is PBS Kids. The site has a ton of fun games that girls (and all kids!) will enjoy, including Weather Explorer, Thank U Maker, and Molly's Epic Mystery.[4]
  5. Poki Kids has a ton of games available, including many games aimed at girls. These games include Creative Puzzle, Chu Choo Cake, Unicorns Birthday Surprise, and Ollie Goes to School.[5]
  6. Girls Go Games is a huge collection of online games aimed at girls. Some of these games can be a lot of fun, including many dress-up games. However, the games on sites like Girls Go Games have been criticized in the past for odd or non-age-appropriate material, so be sure to screen the games on the site before allowing your child to play them.[6]

  1. Stardew Valley is a classic farming sim that is incredibly fun and very cozy. While the game isn't inherently girly, it's a very popular game in general, so it's a good game to try if you think you'll like a farming sim game with a great story and the ability to romance another character. Stardew Valley is available on Steam, GOG, Xbox One, PlayStation 4, Nintendo Switch, iOS, and Android.[7]
  2. Unpacking is a short and sweet game about…unpacking. Okay, it's about more than that, but the story of Unpacking is told via environmental storytelling, as there's not much of a written story to the game. It has a cute art style, and the game follows a girl as she grows up and moves into different houses throughout her life. Unpacking is available on Steam, Nintendo Switch, Xbox One, PlayStation, iOS, Android, and GOG.[8]
  3. Animal Crossing: New Horizons is the newest game in the Animal Crossing series. In this series, you play as a human who lives amongst villagers who are also cute animals. In New Horizons specifically, your character is in charge of renovating a deserted island, and the animal villagers will move in as your island continues to grow. The cute art style makes it a popular game for girls, but anyone can enjoy it. Animal Crossing: New Horizons is available on Nintendo Switch.[9]
  4. Princess Peach: Showtime! is a fun action/platformer game that stars Princess Peach from the Super Mario universe. Girls might be more interested in this game over Mario due to the popular (and pretty awesome) female protagonist, as well as all of her outfits that can be collected in the game. Princess Peach: Showtime! is available on Nintendo Switch.https://www.nintendo.com/us/store/products/princess-peach-showtime-switch
  5. Hello Kitty Island Adventure is a cozy life sim game, somewhat similar to Animal Crossing, but with Sanrio characters instead. If you're a big fan of Hello Kitty or other Sanrio characters, this is a great game to pick up! It's available on Apple Arcade, Nintendo Switch, Steam, and PlayStation 5.[10]
  6. Untitled Goose Game is a lighthearted puzzle game where you play as a "horrible goose." The goose really isn't that horrible, but it does like to mildly inconvenience the residents of a small village. The game is very fun, and it can be a bit challenging at times, but girls (and people) of all ages will find it enjoyable. Untitled Goose Game is available on Steam, Itch, Epic, Nintendo Switch, PlayStation 4, and Xbox One.[11]
  7. The Sims is a massive franchise that spans multiple decades. The main Sims games (The Sims, The Sims 2, The Sims 3, and The Sims 4) are all robust life sim games. There are also spinoffs, including Sims Medieval, Sims Mobile, Sims FreePlay, and MySims, which is an especially cute and cozy version of the game. The game isn't necessarily girly, but girls may enjoy creating characters, dressing them up, and building houses.[12]
  8. Roblox itself isn't a game, but downloading the free Roblox app gives you access to tons and tons of games. There are a lot of girl-focused games in Roblox, but Roblox games should be saved for older kids.[13] Roblox has been in some recent controversies and legal cases regarding a lack of child safety protocols, so be sure to thoroughly vet any games your kids are playing on the platform, and make sure they're not talking to strangers.[14]

Dress-Up Games

PDF download Download Article
  1. DressUpGames.com has a number of dress-up games for girls of all ages. Some games are better suited for younger girls, while others may appeal to older girls. If you're a parent, check out the dress-up game your child wants to play before they play it to ensure it's appropriate for their age.
  2. Doll Divine has similar dress-up games to DressUpGames.com, though there are several games only on this site. Some popular options are Fairy Tale High, Magical Girl Creator, and KPop Hunters (which lets you make a character that looks like they're in K-Pop Demon Hunters).
  3. We already mentioned PBS Kids earlier in this article, but they have a whole section of dress-up games that are perfect for young girls! Some of these games include characters from their favorite shows, such as Elmo and Clifford.
  4. While Girls Go Games has many games for girls to play, they have a whole section on dress-up games, too. However, parents should be sure to screen these games before allowing their child to play to make sure the game's content is age-appropriate.
  5. One of the most popular games on Roblox is Dress to Impress, which is a dress-up game. Although this game has gone viral on social media and is enjoyed by players of all genders, it's stereotypically considered a "girly" game, and it's generally a fun dress-up game. However, due to the recent controversy surrounding child safety on Roblox, parents should closely monitor their child's activity in the game.[15]
  6. The Nikki series is a popular dress-up game series available on several platforms. Nikki started as a mobile game, but has now transitioned to PC and modern consoles with the game's newest release, Infinity Nikki. However, some of the content can be a bit dark (though not graphic or violent), and there are a lot of microtransactions in the game, so the games are best played by older girls (or adults). Love Nikki and Shining Nikki are available on iOS and Android, while Infinity Nikki is available on PC, PlayStation 5, iOS, and Android.[16]

Safety Tips

  1. 1
Always check out games before allowing your child to play. There are a lot of games online, and not all games marketed towards kids are actually child-safe. Before allowing your child to play a game, check it out yourself first before giving them the go-ahead.[17]
  2. 2
Monitor who your child is talking to in online games. If your child is playing an online game with a chat feature, ensure they are not talking to strangers. If you don't want to risk your child talking to strangers at all, check the game's settings to see if the chat function can be disabled, or consider not allowing them to play the game.[18]
  3. 3
Teach your children what information is not safe to give out. If you allow your child to play games with a chat function, be sure to teach them what information should never be shared. This includes personal information like their name, address, and phone number.[19]

What games can girls play?

PDF download Download Article
  1. Girls can play any game they want! While some games are marketed directly at girls, it's important for girls to play any game they want. While gaming is still a male-dominated space, video games in general are becoming less and less stereotyped as a "boy" thing, and more and more girls are calling themselves gamers.[20] It's totally okay to like and play games marketed towards girls, of course, but any game can be a "girl" game if a girl wants to play it.
    • Some stereotypically "boy" video games (such as Call of Duty) can be dangerous and toxic places for girls, however, due to voice and text chat functions.
      • If you're a parent, make sure to vet the games your kids are playing and talk to your daughter often about the game and what happens when she plays.
      • If you're a player, consider turning off voice chat, blocking and reporting toxic players, or muting them so you don't have to hear them.
