The History of First Names

As Shakespeare wrote, "What's in a name?" Your name is a fundamental part of who you are, influencing everything from your identity to how others perceive you. Understanding the origins and meanings behind names connects us to a broader human story.

Names have been around as long as we've had oral histories and written records. In fact, the first name might've been inscribed on a Sumerian clay tablet over 5000 years ago.[1] Early names were often descriptive ex. the Irish Gaelic name Fial, meaning "modest, honorable, generous." Early names were also often compound words like Thorunn, a Norse name using the name of the God "Thor."[2]

As more and more names were developed, eventually people started picking from a pre-established pool of names rather than developing original names each time. Thus, first names have existed in society for a long time. The Romans began more complex practices of multiple names, often to denote social standing and family ties. But when Rome fell, Europe went back to first names only, and surnames wouldn't come back until the Middle Ages.[3]
