What does "He’s just my Tammy" mean?

Pop culture commentator Corey Andrew says the phrase means Will’s crush on Mike is an expression of Will’s own confusion about his feelings and sexuality. Ultimately, Will’s crush ends up being an act of self-discovery. It’s a reference to Robin’s crush on Tammy, which ended up being more about herself than Tammy.

"He’s Just My Tammy" Meaning (Stranger Things)

  1. During his coming-out scene in Season 5 of Stranger Things, Will Byers tells his friends and family that he had a crush on someone who he knew wasn’t “like” him—aka, he knew this person was straight, not gay. It’s assumed (and heavily implied) that the person he had a crush on is his best friend, Mike Wheeler. His attraction to Mike wasn’t about romance–it was about misplaced emotions and Will’s struggle to accept himself. Will actually says, “And, by Tammy, I mean it was never about him, it was about me.”[1]
    • Andrew says, “When Will says this [phrase], he’s not being dismissive or self-protective. He’s offering a framework, borrowed from Robin (Buckley’s) old story about Tammy Thompson, for understanding love that isn’t returned.”[2]
    • “What makes the moment hit so hard is how gentle it is,” Andrew continues. “Will isn’t confessing in a grand speech. He’s translating something complicated into a shared language.”[3]

The line is a powerful expression of self-acceptance and understanding. “In a show packed with chaos, Venus flytrap-headed ghouls, demons and cosmic horror, this tiny line becomes a moment of clarity and self-acceptance,” Andrew explains. He believes it’s one of the most meaningful lines in the series, especially because it makes room for this powerful truth in a queer context. “It feels like one queer character is passing emotional survival knowledge to another,” Andrew says.[4]
    • “This is a series famous for monsters, synths, and blockbuster-level action, but every so often it slows down and does something far braver,” Andrew says. “It lets its characters speak in emotional shorthand.”[5]
    • Andrew continues, “[This] is why the show endures beyond the nostalgia and special effects. It understands that sometimes the most powerful thing isn’t the monster you fight, but the feeling you finally learn how to name.”[6]

Why does Will say "my Tammy"?

PDF download Download Article
  1. The phrase refers to a much earlier scene between Robin and Steve Harrington. We'll break down the meaning of the term "my Tammy" as Robin and Will use it:
    • Back in Season 3, Robin comes out to Steve by telling him that she had a crush on a female classmate, whose name is Tammy Thompson. She details her obsessive infatuation with Tammy, even though Tammy was (presumably) straight and crushing on Steve.[7]
    • Then, in Season 5 of Stranger Things, just before Will comes out, Robin tells him about Tammy Thompson. She describes her ninth-grade crush on Tammy Thompson and how she felt like she would finally be able to be fully herself with Tammy. She thought that if Tammy loved her, she wouldn’t be scared of her sexuality anymore, and whatever consequences it might bring.
    • However, that fantasy went away when Tammy fell for Steve, and Robin eventually realized that “it was never about Tone-Deaf Tammy” and that she “was looking for answers in somebody else” when she “had all the answers,” but “just needed to stop being so g*dd*mn scared…of who [she] really was.”[8]
    • Andrew explains, “‘Tammy’ [is] code for a crush that’s real, tender, and deeply felt, even if it lives entirely on one side. The show isn’t saying unreciprocated love is silly or something to outgrow. It’s saying it still matters and the feeling is valid. ‘Tammy’ ends up symbolizing something most of us have lived through. A harmless, formative crush shapes you, even if it never goes anywhere.”[9]
    • So, when Will calls Mike his “Tammy,” he means that he feels the same way about Mike that Robin does about Tammy. In a nutshell, Will was searching for answers about his own sexuality and was scared to face up to it, so he ended up projecting those feelings onto his friendship with Mike. It’s also possible that Will, who’d never met an out gay person before, felt inspired by Robin and the realization that other queer people exist who can return his feelings.
    • It’s important to note that, since Stranger Things is set in the 1980s, being gay was much more taboo than it is now. Will and Robin likely knew few out gay people in their town, let alone the wider world, if they knew any at all. So, the feelings of confusion and the experience of having a crush on a straight friend are very understandable, not to mention that it’s still a common (and normal!) experience for LGBTQIA+ youth in the present day.[10]

TikTok & Audience Reactions to "He's Just My Tammy"

PDF download Download Article
  1. "Byler" is the “ship name” that fans have for Will Byers and Mike Wheeler. These fans want Mike and Will to have a romantic relationship in the show, and they’ve been egged on by hints throughout the seasons that Will has a crush on Mike. However, nothing romantic has ever happened between the two, although the pair share a deep and emotional (but platonic) connection. With Will’s coming-out scene and him affirming that Mike “isn’t like [him]” and that Mike is actually his “Tammy,” the Stranger Things creators have essentially quashed the idea that Will and Mike would actually become a couple.
    • In response, creators on TikTok and other social media platforms have responded to the “He’s just my Tammy” line. Some reactions are positive…and others are disappointed.
    • For example, this TikTok by @..jubilee shows the creator cheering with the caption, “‘he was my tammy’ best words to ever come out of his mouth.’” We can assume that this creator is not a fan of the Byler ship and believes that the pair is better off as friends.
    • Or, with the opposite reaction, we have this TikTok from @glowbtchh that stitches the coming-out scene with emotional moments between Mike and Will throughout the series, along with a caption that reads, “I’m truly devastated.”
    • Of course, we also have fans who simply refuse to give up on their favorite coupling! In this TikTok by @bylerlebt, the creator writes, “that whole ‘he was just my tammy’ bs was because that’s what Will believes. It’s HIS pov. We still haven’t seen mikes pov and the painting still hasn’t been addressed. Call me delusional but I’m not giving up until I’ve seen the final.”

What is "Byler" in Stranger Things?

PDF download Download Article
  1. The name "Byler" refers to fans wanting a canon, in-show, romantic relationship to happen between these two characters, which they’ve expressed by combining their names into one (Byers + Wheeler = Byler). This fan-desired relationship is a popular one in the Stranger Things fandom, especially since several seasons of the show have alluded to Will having a crush on Mike (although those feelings have never been clearly reciprocated).[11]
    • As of the writing of this article, the penultimate episode of the series has aired, featuring Will’s coming-out scene, where he alludes to his crush on Mike, but brushes it off as a crush that was more about Will’s own self-acceptance journey than it was about any true, lasting, romantic feelings.
    • This moment has divided Byler supporters. Some believe that the idea of a romantic relationship between Mike and Will is totally impossible now, while others believe that the pair could still be endgame.

Who is Tammy in Stranger Things?

PDF download Download Article
  1. Tammy, while shown very briefly in the actual Stranger Things series, plays an important role in multiple character arcs. On a surface level, she’s a classmate of Robin and Steve’s at Hawkin’s High, and she’s known for performing a (terrible) rendition of the National Anthem at a school basketball game. However, she’s notable because Robin had an intense teenage infatuation with her, although Tammy herself had a crush on Steve. Ultimately, however, the realization that Tammy is straight and would never love her back is a catalyst for Robin’s coming-out journey.[12]
    • Robin recognizes that what she has with Tammy isn’t required or real, so she’s able to embark on a journey of discovering and accepting her own sexuality, which leads her to her girlfriend, Vickie.
    • In Season 5, Robin shares this story about Tammy with Will, who’s struggling with his own feelings about his sexuality. This helps Will to better understand his own internal emotions, and it leads to him feeling comfortable enough to be true to himself and come out to his loved ones.
