Find Song Horse Tips from the Experts
In this quiz, we tested your knowledge of horse breeds, but the equine world holds so much more to know. That’s why we chatted with some certified horse experts to bring you insider tips on how to interact with and appreciate our equine friends:
- Equestrian experts Ted and JoAnn Dawson say that, when riding a horse, “Keep the weight in the ball of their foot, keep their leg forward, keep their hands low, and sort of the horse's neck. You know, sit up straight.”[1]
- Certified horsemanship instructor Kathy Richardson explains that “when you mount a horse, relax into the saddle, creating a straight line through your ear, shoulder, hip, and heel.”[2]
- Equestrian specialist and trainer Kate Jutagir says that when interacting with a horse for the first time, “Absolutely have the benefit of someone who has experience guiding you. That is number one, being able to read their body language and their behavior.” Jutagir also tells us that one way to know a horse is content is “if their ears are forward and they're chewing, they're pretty darn happy.”[3]
- Equine expert Jessica Rude explains the importance of proper stirrup sizing: “If they are too short, meaning your knees are too bent, you'll have some knee pain, you'll be uncomfortable from that, and if they're too long and you feel like your legs are too straight, they're reaching for, for the stirrups and you don't have any bend in your knee, that's going to put some strain on your legs as well.”[4]
