All About Fandoms

A “fandom” is a community of people who are very enthusiastic fans of a particular movie, TV, or book series. Within fandoms, there are often characters that become favorites, sparking tons of discussion and fanfiction. There’s also a fair amount of lingo used by people in fandoms, which we’ll go over below:

  • Canon: The source material itself. This term refers to all the events that actually occur in the movie, TV show, or book in question (as opposed to fan-made theories or fan fiction).
  • Headcanon: A piece of information or lore about the source material that a fan makes up themselves but fully believes in in their own head.
  • Shipping: Fans rooting for two characters in the source material to end up together romantically. This can refer to characters that are canonically in a romantic relationship or characters that never actually have a romantic encounter in the OG story.
  • OTP: Stands for “one true pairing,” meaning the romantic pair that you “ship” the most, above all others.
  • Fanfiction (or fanfic): A work of fiction written in the universe of or featuring characters from a story that already exists.
  • AU: Short for “alternative universe,” refers to a work of fanfiction that features characters from the source material, but in a very different setting. For example, this kind of story could transport characters from a fantasy novel to a modern-day coffee shop.[1]
