Numismatics expert Max Hockley explains whether $2 bills are rare and how to get them
PDF download Download Article

You may never have seen a $2 bill in person, but are they really all that rare? The answer is no, but it's also not as common as other small denominations, like the $1 or $5 bill. Still, they're definitely interesting to look at, and a rare few of them can be worth a big chunk of change! In this article, we partnered with a numismatics expert to learn about the rarity of $2 bills and how much they're worth. Plus, we'll explain whether you should hang onto them, and more!

Are 2 dollar bills rare?

Numismatics expert Max Hockley says most 1976 and newer $2 bills are very common and worth only face value. However, older bills with red seals, star notes (serial numbers ending in a star), or errors can be valued as high as $4,500. In 2024, the Federal Reserve said there were 1.7 billion $2 bills in circulation.

  1. For example, you can usually only get money in $1 bills, $5 bills, and higher denominations from the bank. The Federal Reserve Bank reports $3.7 billion worth of two-dollar bills, or 1.7 billion two-dollar bills were circulating in 2024. Compare that to 14.9 billion one-dollar bills circulating in the same year![1] Still, Hockley says $2 bills are common.[2] For instance, you might occasionally receive one as part of your change at the store when you pay for your purchase with cash.
    • Are $2 bills discontinued? Many people assume that two-dollar bills have been discontinued, but the Federal Reserve Bank still prints them! As of 2024, they make up about 3.1% of the bills in circulation.[3] They did, however, stop printing them for a short period—from 1966 to 1976—due to a lack of demand.[4]
    • Why are $2 bills rare? The Federal Reserve doesn't print many $2 bills because not many people use them, so the bills in circulation aren't wearing out very fast. Historically, people didn't like them because they were anecdotally linked to election rigging, gambling, and prostitution in the 1920s.

  1. According to Hockley, most $2 bills are only worth face value, which includes common ones like the 1976 and newer bills.[5] Sometimes, $2 bills that haven't been circulated in public can go for up to $3-$5. However, Hockley says even common bills with fancy serial numbers and errors can be worth a lot. Additionally, he says older bills with red seals (US Notes) can be valuable.[6] In fact, some people will pay hundreds or even thousands of dollars for it! Here's a breakdown of some valuable $2 bills that sell for big bucks:[7]
    • 1869 US Note with a Red Seal
      • Circulated: $500-$1200
      • Uncirculated: $3800
    • 1880 $2 US Note with a Brown Seal and Blue Serial Number
      • Circulated: $660-$2200
      • Uncirculated: $3500
    • 1890 $2 Treasury Note with a Red Seal
      • Circulated: $550-$2500
      • Uncirculated: $4500
    • 1976 $2 Bicentennial Bill
    • 1995 $2 Federal Reserve Note BEP Premium Set of 12
      • Value: $500

Should you hang onto 2 dollar bills?

  1. Most $2 bills aren't worth more than a few dollars, and that's only if they're uncirculated (which most aren't). However, since there aren't very $2 bills in circulation compared with other denominations, they're still pretty special! You might consider setting back a few as keepsakes for future generations, or just in case the Federal Reserve decides to stop issuing them. Otherwise, if you have no particular attachment to them, they're still legal tender, so you can still spend them like normal.

How to Find 2 Dollar Bills

  1. “If you just want to get common $2 bills, you can order them from your local bank,” according to Hockley. “Sometimes, they will even have them on hand for you to withdraw.”[9] If they don't have any, ask them to order some from the Federal Reserve Bank.[10]
  2. Aside from asking your bank, shopping is your best bet for finding $2 bills in the wild. Paying for goods with cash may not be as quick and convenient as tapping your credit card, but most stores and restaurants still accept it. Be sure to pay with larger denominations, so you can get plenty of change!
    • For example, if your purchase costs $3, pay with a $10. If it costs $12, pay with a $20, (and so on).
    • Tip: When the cashier is making your change, politely ask them if they have any $2 bills in their drawer that they could give you.
      • Say, "Excuse me, but do you have any $2 bills? I'm trying to collect them." Remember to thank them for checking, even if they don't find any!
