Answering Your Kink Questions
What is a kink?
A kink is a particular sexual practice that gets someone aroused and that is considered unconventional.
What counts as a kink?
A kink is anything sexual that’s more than the usual penetration. That includes toys, behaviors, lifestyles, positions—if it’s something unusual, then it’s probably a kink! Now, what counts as unusual depends on who you ask. For some people, things that others consider kinky are pretty tame. And for others, things some consider tame are pretty kinky. For the most part, though, it’s safe to say that if it’s more than just insertion, it’s probably at least a little kinky.
Is kink normal or healthy?
Absolutely! Almost everyone who experiences sexual attraction and pleasure has something in particular that gets them going, and for many people, that thing is considered a kink. It’s a natural human feeling, and it isn’t dirty or shameful.
Are some kinks unnatural or not normal?
That’s a trickier question! Experts are still debating where kinks come from and why they develop, but many sex experts stress that your urges, no matter how unusual, are nothing to be ashamed of. The more important question is whether acting on those urges would hurt yourself or someone else. Some kinks, like pain kinks, require much more care and communication between partners in order to be safe and healthy. With other kinks, there’s simply no way to practice them responsibly, but that doesn’t mean the urge itself is evil.
How can I practice kink?
Communication, communication, communication! That’s all there is to it. If you have something you want to try, bring it up to your partner. Say, “Hey, I’ve been curious about doing this. Would you be down to try?” It’s okay if they’re not comfortable with it—everyone is into different things, and what’s kinky to you might be a turn off for someone else—but if they belittle you or act like it’s strange, they may not be the healthiest partner for you.
