Finding out whether or not a contact has blocked your phone number might seem tricky, as you're not notified when someone blocks you. Fortunately, you can still find out if your number is blocked by calling your contact a few times and paying attention to when your call is sent to voicemail. You can also tell by sending a text message, checking social media, or looking at your suggested contacts. Read on to learn how to know if someone blocked your number, plus how to block numbers and contacts on your Android or iPhone.
Signs Someone Blocked Your Phone Number
- Your calls go straight to voicemail.
- You don't see "Delivered" under sent texts (iPhone).
- You don't see "Delivered" or 2 checkmarks under sent texts (Android).
- Your calls go through when you call from a different phone number.
- The person no longer shows up in suggested contacts (Android).
- You're blocked on social media.
Steps
Signs Your Number is Blocked
-
Your calls go straight to voicemail. If you hear one ring, followed by the person's voicemail greeting, or you never hear a ring at all, the person may have blocked your number. However, it could also mean the person's phone is off, out of range, or in airplane mode, so it's not always the best way to tell.[1]
-
You don't see "Delivered" under texts on an iPhone. Even if you don't have read receipts enabled, you may be able to tell whether someone has blocked your number based on whether you see "Delivered" below your texts. This trick will only work if both of you are using an iPhone, or if you're texting an Android user and you both have RCS enabled.
- If you do see "Delivered" under your text bubble, it doesn't mean they've read the message, but it does mean the text was delivered to their phone. In this case, you're definitely not blocked.[2]
- If you never see "Delivered," your messages may be blocked, or the person's phone may be turned off, out of range, or have data turned off.

You don't see "Delivered" or two checkmarks under texts on an Android. If you have an Android with RCS and are texting another Android user via RCS (or someone with an iPhone via RCS), you will usually see one checkmark under a text immediately after you send it, then two checkmarks once the message is delivered to the person's phone. If you have read receipts enabled, the checkmarks will turn blue if the person reads the message. Even if you don't use read receipts, you should still see two regular (not blue) checkmarks upon delivery.[3] On some Androids, you'll see "Delivered" instead.
- If you only see one checkmark and the second never appears, or you never see "Delivered" under the texts you send someone, they may have blocked your number. However, their phone may be off, they aren't using RCS, or they don't have service.
- If you're using a Samsung phone, you may need to enable delivery reports. Here's how:[4]
- Open the Messages app.
- Tap ⋮ and select Settings.
- Tap More Settings.
- Tap Text messages.
- Enable "Show when delivered."
-
Your calls go through when you call from a different device. Try calling from a different device or phone number. While you can try hiding your phone number using *67 or similar, this might not always work–many people block unknown callers. For this reason, it's best to try using someone else's phone to do this test. If calling from a different phone number causes different results–for example, you hear more than one ring before being sent to voicemail, or the person actually answers–you'll know they blocked you.
- If you don't have another phone to test with, ask a friend to make the call for you.
-
The person doesn't show up in your suggested contacts (Android). If the person hasn't blocked you and they are not in your contact list, they should appear as a suggested contact on your phone.[5] If they've blocked you, they won't be suggested.
- To test this, you'll first need to remove the person from your contacts. However, be sure to write down their contact info so you can add them back later if needed.[6]
- Then, create a new contact in the Contacts app.
- In the phone number field, type the person's phone number into the phone number field.
- If the person's name is suggested once you type their phone number, the person has not blocked you. If their name is not suggested, you are likely blocked.
-
You're blocked on social media. If someone blocked your phone number, they may have also blocked you on social media apps like Facebook, Instagram, or TikTok. If you're blocked on those apps, your suspicions that your phone number has been blocked are likely true.
- If searching for the person's name does not bring up their profile, even though it used to, they may have blocked your account.
- Try having a mutual friend perform the same test. If the other person can still see the profile but you can't, you're definitely blocked.

QuestionWhen you block someone do they know?

Staff Answer
wikiHow Staff EditorStaff AnswerThere is nothing to alert the person the moment you block them. Your phone carrier won’t inform anyone they’ve been blocked. Rather, they’ll work it out eventually when they can never get through to you, or if you tell them (or someone else offers this information to them). -
QuestionHow many times does the phone ring when you are blocked?
wikiHow Staff EditorThis answer was written by one of our trained team of researchers who validated it for accuracy and comprehensiveness.
Staff Answer
wikiHow Staff EditorStaff AnswerIn many instances, the phone will ring out after half to one ring only. In some cases, there will be no ring at all. Be aware that what can happen when you’re blocked will depend on the carrier and where you are located but as a general rule, there won’t be many ringing sounds, and this will be a repeated pattern every time you try to call. -
QuestionCan you tell if someone blocked your texts?
wikiHow Staff EditorThis answer was written by one of our trained team of researchers who validated it for accuracy and comprehensiveness.
Staff Answer
wikiHow Staff EditorStaff AnswerIn some cases you may be able to tell that you have been blocked. Various methods for finding out are explained in detail in the article above. For example, since you can’t work this out by texting, you can try calling the number and listening to see what happens. Signs that you might have been blocked include the call being diverted after a half or one ring only or a message that the contact is unreachable. However, these signs might just mean the network is down, the caller is busy or the caller’s phone is dead, so try again later, perhaps several times over a few days. If it keeps happening, it could mean you’ve been blocked. You might ask a friend to call to see if the person answers and maybe even ask them about the block. If you truly suspect you’ve been blocked, then perhaps try to talk in person to the person whom you think has blocked you, to find out why.
