Do you want to know how people add links to a specific time in the comments of YouTube videos? It’s really easy to do so. Doing so helps the video creator by adding better navigation and retention. It can also show in Google searches, which improves the SEO. This wikiHow article teaches you how to comment on a timestamp in the comments section of a YouTube video. As a bonus, we’ll also teach you how to share a video with a timestamp outside of YouTube.

Quickly Comment a Timestamp

Open YouTube and find a video you want to comment on. Pause the video where you want to add a timestamp comment. Scroll down and tap Comments on mobile devices. Then click or tap Add a comment. Type the timestamp as it appears in the video (i.e., “1:39”). Post your comment.

  1. You can either use the YouTube mobile app or you can go to youtube.com in a web browser.
    • You need to be logged in to comment on YouTube. If you aren’t logged in, click or tap Sign In and log in with the Google account associated with your YouTube account.
  2. This should be a video on which you wish to leave a comment. You can do so in a couple of different ways:[1]
    • You can tap the magnifying glass icon in the mobile app or click the search bar at the top of the website. Enter video or channel name. Click or tap the video you want to comment on.
    • Alternatively, you can click or tap a video on your home screen, or you can search for videos within your subscriptions.

  3. You should pause the video at the point you wish to link. You'll see the time stamp in the bottom-left corner of the video section in hours:minutes:seconds format.[2]
    • For example, if you paused the video one minute and thirty seconds in, you'll see "1:30" in the bottom-left corner of the window.
  4. To view all the comments on the mobile app, scroll down and tap Comments below the video.
  5. On the mobile app, it will appear at the bottom of the screen. On a desktop computer, it will appear above the list of comments.
  6. Doing so will automatically create a link to that point in the video when you post your comment.[3]
    • For the previous example, you might type "Hey, what happened at 1:30?" to call attention to your paused point.

  1. You can either use the YouTube mobile app or you can go to youtube.com in a web browser.
  2. This should be the video you want to share.
    • For example, if you paused the video one minute and thirty seconds in, you'll see "1:30" in the bottom-left corner of the window.
  4. It’s below the video playback screen.
  5. It’s at the bottom of the share menu on a desktop computer.
    • This option currently isn’t available on mobile devices, but you can still add a timestamp manually when you paste the link.
  6. This will copy the link to the video. If you are using a desktop computer, it will copy the video link with the timestamp. If you are using a mobile device, it will only copy the video link. You will need to add the timestamp manually.
  7. You can post it on a social media, message board, text message, email, or a text document.
  8. If you are using a mobile device, you will need to add the timestamp at the end of the URL. To do so, add ?t= at the end of the URL, followed by the timestamp in seconds (i.e., “60” for 1 minute, “90” for 1:30).[4]
  9. When the person you share the link with clicks on it, it will open the video on YouTube at the moment of the timestamp in the URL.

Only the times stated within the video loop will create linking time stamps. If it's outside that time, it won’t work.
