KPop Demon Hunters continues to dominate the charts, including the energetic song “How It’s Done.” But some fans are raising their brows at a particular line about a “napalm era.” What is a napalm era? What does the line mean? And why do some fans find it sus? We’re here to get you caught up.

Napalm Era Explanation

Trend expert Jemaree Jay explains that “fit check for my napalm era” references the chemical weapon napalm. Napalm burns everything it touches, so to have a “napalm era” means to let loose and go wild. Some fans say this is insensitive, given the devastating use of napalm by the U.S. in the Korean and Vietnamese wars.

Napalm Era Lyrics Meaning

  1. Jay explains, “The full lyric [is] ‘fit check for my napalm era’...It basically just means ‘my outfit is the bomb.’”[1] The lyric is sung by Mira during the song “How It’s Done.”[2]
    • Jay adds that the lyric refers to the napalm bombs the US used in Vietnam during the Vietnam War. So, he says, “The lyric is most likely talking about how fire Mira's outfit is.”[3]
    • Napalm is a chemical weapon known for being an incredibly destructive and messy gel substance that burns everything it touches.[4] By being in her “napalm era,” Mira is saying she’s ready to let loose and stunt on the competition, and she doesn’t care about the consequences.
    • In slang, an “era” is a phase in someone’s life. For example, a “flop era” is a period of failure. So a “napalm era” is a period of wild, unrestrained behavior.
    • The line before this says, “Heels, nails, blade, mascara, fit check for my napalm era.” A “fit check” is a way to say “check out my outfit.” Here, Mira is saying that she’s all dressed and glammed to kill some demons and look good doing it.
  2. In KPop Demon Hunters, Mira is the most rebellious member of Huntr/x. She’s hot-headed and temperamental, and easily the edgiest of the group. Before joining Huntr/x, though, she was the black sheep of her family, a problem child who wouldn’t behave. It makes sense that Mira would have the “napalm era” line, then, since she’s the most volatile of the group, just like napalm, and now she’s ready to fight without holding back.
    • Mira says herself that she has a short fuse, and that her aggressive personality drives people away, so for her to sing about her “napalm era” is a statement, one that says, “The gloves are off and I won’t hold back, no matter how messy it gets,” which is a big deal for a character who often has to hold herself back.

Why is “napalm era” controversial?

PDF download Download Article
  1. Napalm is an intensely violent, destructive weapon first used in WWII, then the Korean and Vietnamese wars by the United States. The weapon causes gruesome chemical burning and disfigurement, and many people in Korea and Vietnam still feel the effects of its use on their relatives and their land.[5] Some fans have pointed out that using references to napalm in a lighthearted song about confidence isn’t the best look, and makes light of a dark and devastating period of history.
    • Others say that since Mira is Korean herself, the line might be a way to reclaim an ugly history, using one’s cultural scars as armor for battle. The song was also written in part by the Korean musician 24 and other Korean collaborators.[6]
