Otherkins, Therians, and Normals Explained
What is a therian?
A therian is someone who identifies as a certain non-human animal, either living or historical. Spiritually, emotionally, and psychologically, they relate to this animal the same way humans relate to being human. Often, therians participate in certain behaviors to help them feel more at home in a human body while being an animal, like walking on all fours or vocalizing like an animal.
What is an otherkin?
An otherkin is a therian who identifies as a non-human, non-living animal, like a mythical creature, cryptid, or a spiritual being. For example, they might identify as a dragon, mermaid, fairy, or angel.
What is a normal?
A normal is a person who identifies as a human and feels more or less comfortable with that identity. They might have fun exploring animal identities or acting like animals, like furries, but they don’t literally feel as though they are those animals.
Are therians LGBTQ+?
Therianthropy isn’t considered LGBTQ+, which is a spectrum that has more to do with gender and sexuality. Therianthropy, on the other hand, has to do with someone’s physical and spiritual identity. Of course, therians can be LGBTQ+ if they experience same-sex attraction or identify as transgender, but that’s usually a different matter from their identity as an animal.
Are therians the same as furries?
Not quite! Furries are people who take special interest in a specific animal, and may enjoy dressing or acting like that animal, but don’t necessarily feel as though they literally are that animal in their day-to-day life. Furries can be therians, and therians can be furries, but they aren’t one and the same.
Is a therian a spirit animal?
Nope! Spirit animals are indigenous, spiritual beings that guide a person on their journey through life, but the person doesn’t necessarily see themselves as that animal.
