Get prints of pictures, with or without AirPrint

Your iPhone takes amazing photos, so it only makes sense that you'd want to be able to print them from your home printer! If your printer is AirPrint-compatible, you'll be able to print directly to it from your iPhone as long as you're on the same network. For printers that don't support AirPrint, you can usually use an app from the printer manufacturer to print your photos. You can even order professional prints straight from your iPhone using an app for a photo print service. Our guide will walk you through how to share and print the photos you take with your iPhone.

Printing Photos on iPhone

  • If your printer is AirPrint enabled, make sure the printer and iPhone are on the same Wi-Fi network. Open Photos, select the photo, and tap Share > Print.
  • For older printers without AirPrint, you may be able to print wirelessly through a dedicated printer app.
  • If you don’t have a printer or you want professional prints, download an app for a photo print service and order prints.

Using an AirPrint Printer

  1. The process for this will vary depending on your printer. Generally, you'll use the printer's built-in menu to select your wireless network and enter the password.
    • Most newer printers are AirPrint-enabled. You can see if your printer is AirPrint-compatible by searching for it in Apple’s list of AirPrint-enabled printers.
    • If your printer does not support AirPrint, see the next section.
  2. Most modern desktop printers will have a special tray for photo paper. This tray may be adjustable, and the location will vary depending on the printer. Refer to your printer's documentation for instructions on putting photo paper in the tray.
    • Your iPhone will automatically send photos you print to your printer's photo paper tray.
    • If your printer doesn’t have a specialized photo paper tray, load your photo paper into the main paper tray.

  3. You'll need to be on the same local wireless network as the AirPrint printer. To check which network you’re connected to:
  4. Open the Photos app, then navigate to the picture you want to print.[1]
  5. Scroll down in the Share menu until you find the Print option. It’s next to an icon of a printer. Tap Print to open a menu of print options.
  6. You might already see your printer listed in the Printer field. If it says “No Printer Selected,” or if there’s a different printer listed, tap Printer. Select your printer from the Known Printers list.[3]
    • Don’t see your printer? Double-check that it’s turned on and that both devices are connected to the same Wi-Fi network.
  7. You’ll see several settings in the printer options menu. From here, you can:
    • Tap Presets to select from a list of preset color options, including Black and White, Color, and Color - Fine.
    • Select the number of copies you want to print.
    • Toggle Print in Color on or off.
    • Select your paper size. The correct size may be automatically selected based on what’s loaded into your printer tray.
    • Tap Media & Quality to select the type of media and the quality of your print.
      • Use the Media Type dropdown to select the type of photo paper you’re printing on (e.g., “Photo,” “Photo Glossy Paper,” “Photo Matte Paper,” etc.).
      • Use the Print Quality dropdown to select how high-quality you want your print to be. You can choose from Draft, Normal, and Best.
  8. It’s the blue icon that looks like a printer at the top right corner of the screen. Your printer will automatically attempt to print from the photo paper tray.

Using a Non-AirPrint Printer

  1. Your printer will need to be connected to your network in order to send photos to print. The process for this varies depending on the printer you're using. See Install a Network Printer for detailed instructions.
  2. Most printer manufacturers have a dedicated mobile app available that will allow you to connect to your printer. Open the App Store, find the app from your printer manufacturer, and tap the "Get" button to download and install it. Open your newly installed printer app once the download is complete.
  3. The printer registration process will vary depending on the app you're using, but generally, you'll need to tap an "Add Printer" button and then search your network for available printers.
  4. If you're using the app from your printer's manufacturer, and the printer is connected to the same wireless network as your iPhone, you should see it in the list of available printers.
    • If you don't see your printer, make sure that it is connected to the same network. Restarting the printer and the router may help.
    • Some wireless printers generate their own Wi-Fi network that you must connect to on your phone.
    • If your printer doesn’t have wireless networking capability, you may still be able to connect your iPhone to it with a USB cable.
  5. This will vary depending on the app, but you can typically browse the photos on your iPhone and iCloud and choose which you want to print from within the printer app.
  6. Navigate through your camera roll and select the photos that you want to send to your printer.
  7. Most printer apps give you more print settings options than AirPrint. You can usually choose the paper size and type, and other options may be available depending on the app.
  8. The selected photos will be sent to your printer and will print from the photo tray if photo paper is inserted.

  1. There are a variety of printing services available that will allow you to order prints to either be delivered to your house or picked up from popular retail outlets like CVS or Walgreens. This is a good option if you don’t have your own printer or you want higher-quality prints. Some popular services include:
  2. You'll be able to browse the photos on your device's camera roll, and in some apps, you can browse your iCloud Photo Library as well.
  3. After selecting your images, you'll be able to choose the print size and paper type you want. Different options will have different costs.
    • Some of these services offer specialized photo print products, such as photo books, canvases, glass tiles, and more.
  4. Depending on the service, you may be able to select your shipping speed, or when you want to pick up the pictures. These options will vary.
  5. After choosing all of your options, you'll be prompted to pay for your order. Some apps may include support for Apple Pay if you have that set up on your device.
