If you don't want to see the Bing search engine, extension, or start page in Firefox on your computer, you can easily remove Bing from Firefox. In most cases, Bing is super easy to remove as long as you know where to look. This wikiHow article will teach you how to remove the Bing extension and search engine, reset your start page, and even reset Firefox to make sure Bing is completely removed from the browser.
Removing Bing from Firefox: Quick Tips
- To change your search engine to something other than Bing, go to ☰ > Settings > Search and select a different search product.
- To stop seeing Bing when you open new Firefox tabs or windows, go to ☰ > Settings > Home and select Firefox Home (Default) for both options.
- To remove Bing-related add-ons, go to ☰ > Extensions and Themes, click ••• next to Bing, and select Remove.
Steps
-
Click ☰ at the top-right corner of Firefox. This three-line menu icon, also called the applications menu, is in the top right corner of your browser.
- Use this method if you want to make a search engine other than Bing–such as Google or DuckDuckGo–your default search engine.
-
Click Settings. This opens your Firefox settings.Advertisement
-
Click the Search tab. You'll find this in the panel on the left side of the page next to a magnifying glass.[1]
-
Click the drop-down menu and choose a search engine other than Bing. Firefox will use the search engine that's listed under "Default Search Engine" when you type your search into the search bar or the address bar.
-
Open Firefox and click the menu ☰. This three-line menu icon is in the top right corner of your browser.
- If opening a new browser window or tab defaults to a Bing page, you can use this method to change your start page, also called your home page.[2]
-
Click Settings. It's in the second-to-last grouping of menu options.
-
Click the Home tab. You'll see this in the panel on the left side of the window next to an icon of a house.
-
Click the "Homepage and new windows" drop-down and select "Firefox Home (Default)". Alternatively, you can select a custom URL. If Bing is currently your default home page, you can change it here. Now when you launch Firefox or a new Firefox window, you'll see Firefox's default start page.
-
Click the "Tabs" drop-down and select "Firefox Home (Default)". This changes the homepage that appears on new tabs to the default Firefox start page.
-
Open Firefox and click ☰. This three-line menu icon is in the top right corner of your browser.
- Use this method if Bing still shows up in Firefox, even after changing your start page and default search engine.
-
Click Extensions and Themes. It's near the middle of the menu. You can also press Ctrl + Shift + A (Windows) or Cmd + Shift + A (Mac).[3]
-
Click Extensions. It's in the panel on the left side of the page, next to an icon of a jigsaw puzzle piece.
-
Click … and Remove next to any unauthorized extensions, like SearchAssist Incognito or Bing. If you can't remove the unauthorized extension, you might be able to uninstall it from Windows Control Panel (Windows) or the Applications folder (Mac).[4]
- If Bing is still showing up in Firefox, you may have inadvertently installed some malware. You can reset Firefox to remove all traces of Bing and other unauthorized apps.
-
Open Firefox and click ☰. This app icon looks like a red fox, or red panda, wrapped around a blue/purple orb. You can find this app icon in your Start menu (Windows) or in the Applications folder (Mac).
- Doing this will reset your extensions, open sites, and preferences, so only do this if other methods of removing Bing did not work.
-
Click Help. It's near the bottom of the menu.[5]
-
Click More Troubleshooting information. This will open a tab that shows information about Firefox, its latest crashes, as well as some of your computer's information.
-
Click Refresh Firefox…. You'll see this toward the top right corner of the page. Clicking this will reset your extensions and customizations.
- Once you're sure that you want to continue, click Refresh Firefox in the pop-up window. The web browser will close so it can refresh; click Finish when prompted, and Firefox will open again.[6]
