Find out where the TikTok & Roblox slang term came from
PDF download Download Article

If you spend much time on Roblox or TikTok, you might have seen the term “retroslop” popping up recently. The term can refer to either avatars or games, and because the term is new (not to mention highly subjective), it can be hard to figure out just what it means. That’s what we’re here for. We’re taking a look at what retroslop is (and isn’t) and where the term came from.

What does “retroslop” mean?

Retroslop is usually used to describe Roblox avatars that combine older, blocky bodies with new accessories. The mismatched styles can look chaotic, hence the term “slop.” It can also refer to newer games that use intentionally retro-looking elements (like studs on panels) but aren’t authentically retro games.

What is “retroslop” on Roblox & TikTok?

  1. Most often, it refers to avatars that use retro, blocky Roblox bodies (usually R6 builds) with mismatched UGC (user-generated content) accessories. These characters usually use excessive accessories to create a messy look that’s not authentically retro. Some players criticize the look by calling it retroslop.[1]
    • Newer games that combine modern mechanics with retro-looking elements (like studded panels) are also sometimes called retroslop.[2] The term is sometimes applied to games like Forsaken, Grow a Garden, and Crossroads.
    • The term “retroslop” originated as an insult, but some Robloxians have embraced it as a trend. These users intentionally mix and match retro and new Roblox designs—sometimes to troll other users who hate the look (like in this video).
    • The term “retroslop” is really subjective, and some people have come to use it as an insult for anything in Roblox that looks vaguely retro or overly decorated (as seen in this video). However, it generally doesn’t apply to authentically retro games and avatars.

Where did the term “retroslop” come from?

  1. The earliest known meme that criticized the retroslop look was titled “retro bait slop roblox game starter pack.” It included, among other things, game designs with a “lack of material usage” and “characters that (horrifyingly) misrepresent retro.”[3]
    • The meme was posted to the subreddit r/bloxymemes by user u/handsomeboy23344.
    • Dressing in retroslop to intentionally annoy other players is sometimes referred to as “slopcore.”
  2. Between May and June 2025, the term “retroslop” started appearing in Roblox and around social media, although it’s not clear exactly who coined it. Players began making Reddit posts asking if their avatars were retroslop (like this post), and memes poking fun at the aesthetic started making the rounds.[4]
    • For instance, in June 2025, TikToker @elio.aaa posted this video captioned “new ragebait method discovered.” In the video, he chases someone around a Roblox experience while the other player says “On my mama get that retroslop out of here.” (Naturally, that phrase spawned its own memes.)
    • A popular comedy video was posted to TikTok by @blockboy_192 where a player is followed by a retroslop character asking for “Gubbys”—a newer Roblox character popular with fans of retroslop.
