What does SDIYBT stand for?

Slang expert Shayan Faraz says SDIYBT is short for “start digging in your butt, twin.” This nonsensical phrase is often used on TikTok to make other people laugh; it doesn’t have a particular meaning. The phrase comes from a SpongeBob edit in which Plankton asks a robot for a Krabby Patty.

  1. Faraz says, “SDIYBT is an absurd and crude punchline phrase that originated from a viral SpongeBob Squarepants TikTok meme video.”[1] While the phrase is pretty nonsensical, TikTok use it in a few different ways. In most cases, it’s just to make their friends laugh. Sometimes, it can be a way of telling someone to lock in, or stay focused.[2] It can also be used to refer to someone who has “brainrot,” as the stereotype is that people who use “SDIYBT” are somewhat mindless.
    • The phrase originated from a SpongeBob edit (which we’ll explain in detail in the section below), and many TikTokers share videos of them lip-syncing to the audio.
    • SDIYBT is frequently used as a hashtag on videos related to the original edit or the sound.
    • While it sounds a bit crass, SDIYBT is just a harmless phrase kids and teens use to be silly.

  1. “The phrase comes from a scene where Plankton speaks to a SpongeBob robot character, asking him how to make a Krabby Patty. The Spongebob robot responds with ‘Start digging in your butt, twin,’ which went viral for its crudeness and absurdity,” according to Faraz. “The phrase has since been used in a variety of SpongeBob themed voiceover videos and edits.”[3] Between May and July 2025, many memes using the phrase “digging in yo butt” popped up on sites like TikTok and Instagram.
    • The video gained over 350,000 views in about 2 weeks. Other TikTokers then began posting videos lip-syncing to the sound. The phrase was quickly shortened to the acronym “SDIYBT.”
    • While it’s unclear why the meme blew up, TikToker @oe.ytv1 took it a step further on July 4th, posting an edit from the SpongeBob SquarePants episode “Welcome to the Chum Bucket.”[4]
