Having problems hearing videos on YouTube or YouTube TV? If you don't have sound on YouTube but have sound on everything else, it's usually a problem with your browser or app. Here's what to do when the sound is not working on YouTube on your computer, Android, iPhone, iPad, or TV.

Why Is YouTube Playing Without Sound?

If your YouTube videos suddenly have no sound, make sure your volume is turned on for your device and that the tab or browser is unmuted. Ad-blockers can also cause YouTube to have no sound, so disable it if you have one.

Disable any Ad-blockers.

If you have an ad-blocker enabled when trying to watch YouTube, you may have sound or video issues. Turn off your ad-blocker, restart your browser, and then try watching the video again.

Make sure the video isn't muted.

At the bottom-left of the video, you'll find the volume slider. Hover your cursor over the volume slider, and then drag the circle all the way to the right to increase the volume.^{[1]

Check if your browser is muted.

Most browsers have the option to mute tabs. If you can't hear sound on YouTube, make sure you didn't mute tabs accidentally. To check, look for the volume icon with a slash through it located on the tab.
- If you see this symbol, right-click the tab and click Unmute Tab or similar.

Check the volume mixer.

Make sure the volume mixer has your browser enabled. The volume mixer on your Windows computer allows you to set the volume of different programs. If you're using a Mac, you'll need to check your sound control menu.
- Windows:
  - Find the volume icon in the bottom-right corner (you may need to click the up-arrow to open the system tray).
  - Right-click the volume icon.
  - Click Open Volume mixer.
  - Click and drag the volume slider for your browser upwards.
- Mac:
  - Click the volume icon in the top-right corner.
  - Drag the slider to the right to increase the volume.

Restart your browser.

If your browser is experiencing issues, try restarting the entire browser rather than the YouTube tab itself.

Update your browser.

If you're running an older version of your browser, you may experience software bugs. You can find updates for your browser in its settings.

Clear your cache and cookies.

If sound isn't working on YouTube, you can try deleting your cache and cookies. This is a good way to remove corrupted data. Once cleared, restart your browser and try again.
