PDF download Download Article

If you're trying to send money on Venmo and see "We lost connection with your bank," you'll need to remove and reconnect your bank account. It's easy to do, and we'll walk you through the process.

Things You Should Know

  • If Venmo needs to re-verify your bank account, you'll see "We lost connection with your bank" when trying to send money.
  • To fix the error, you'll need to delete your bank account and re-add it.
  • If you use Plaid, a safe third-party service, to reconnect, you can verify and use your account instantly.

Why Venmo Lost Connection with Your Bank

  1. Venmo may disconnect your bank account if you've updated your online bank account password, or if some other facet of your online banking has changed.[1] Venmo may also lose the connection with your bank if it's been a long time since you've originally verified your account, or if you've been processing more or higher-value transactions than usual.
    • Until you reconnect your bank with Venmo, you won't be able to send money from or withdraw to your bank account.

How to Reconnect Your Bank

  1. To fix the "lost connection with your bank" error, you'll need to remove and reconnect your account.
  2. Tap the account for which you received the "lost connect" error, tap Remove, and follow the on-screen instructions to unlink it.
  3. You'll see this under the plus (+) on the Me tab.
  4. You'll be asked if you want to add your bank account with Plaid or verify it manually.
    • Plaid is a safe service that instantly verifies your bank account so you can send Venmo funds immediately. You will need to enter your online banking login information to verify with Plaid.
    • If your bank doesn't support Plaid, or you prefer not to use a third-party service, you can add your bank info manually. Manual verification can take 1 to 3 business days, and you won't be able to send funds in the meantime.
  5. If you use Plaid, you can instantly reconnect your bank account and send money immediately.
    • If you want to verify manually, tap Verify bank manually, then follow the on-screen instructions to enter your bank account details. Venmo will deposit two small amounts (less than $1) into your bank account within 3 business days. When you receive the deposits:
      • Return to the Venmo app and tap Me.
      • Select the unconfirmed bank under "Banks and cards."
      • Tap Verify and enter the two small amounts deposited by Venmo into the "Amount" fields.
      • Tap Verify to complete verification.[2]
  6. Search for and select your bank, and then follow the on-screen instructions to log in to your online banking account and verify the connection. Once confirmed, your bank will be reconnected and ready to use.
    • If your bank doesn't support Plaid, you'll be prompted to verify your account manually.
    • Depending on your bank, you may also be able to link your bank-issued debit card for instant verification. Just return to Me, tap Add a bank or card, select Card, and follow the on-screen instructions to verify your card.[3]
