What Makes Someone a Demigod?
In Greek mythology, a demigod is a person who has one mortal (i.e., human) parent and one divine parent (i.e., a god or goddess). Born from these two individuals, the demigod child will be mortal, but they’ll also have enhanced human traits, divine powers, and some sort of connection to the god that they came from.
Often, a demigod will have superhuman strength and a lengthened lifespan, and their divine powers will often be linked to their parentage—for example, the child of Poseidon (god of the sea) may be able to manipulate water. Or, as another example, the child of Aphrodite (goddess of love and beauty) may be able to charm and persuade others or cast beautiful illusions.
Who is the most powerful demigod? In Greek myth, the most famous and powerful demigod is Heracles (or Hercules). Heracles, a child of Zeus, has immense strength and endurance that far surpasses any other mortal or demigod. Other popular demigods include Achilles, Perseus, Theseus, and Helen of Troy.
- In Rick Riordan’s Percy Jackson franchise, which has widely popularized the concept of demigods, the titular character is often considered to be the strongest modern demigod. This is because Percy, who is a child of Poseidon (one of the Big Three Olympians), has exceptional hydrokinesis (water manipulation) powers, as well as powerful resilience, excellent sword skills, and other special superhuman qualities.
