Who Are the Schuyler Sisters?

Like the other characters in the award-winning Broadway musical Hamilton, the Schuyler sisters were real people! From eldest to youngest, Angelica, Eliza, and Peggy Schuyler were important historical figures. Angelica Schuyler was a socialite and eloped with British businessman John Barker Church at 21. Eliza Schuyler is famously known for being the wife of Alexander Hamilton, but she did much more than marry the ambitious leader. Eliza served as a liaison between Alexander and his publisher, copying his notes and political writings. Peggy Schuyler wasn’t in the public eye as much as her sisters. At 25, she married a distant cousin to help him advance his political career.

What the musical doesn’t portray is that there were two other Schuyler sisters, Cornelia and Catharine. Cornelia is believed to have famously defied her father and run away with her true love, George Washington Morton. Catharine was known as the “baby” of the family, with there being a 25-year age gap between her and Angelica.
