Meet the Bat Boys of ACOTAR

In Sarah J. Maas’s A Court of Thorns and Roses series, the “Bat Boys” are a trio of characters: Rhysand, Cassian, and Azriel. In the novels, these three characters are Illyrian warriors, which means that they have bat-like wings extending from their backs. Consequently, the nickname “Bat Boys” was given to this group by fans of the book series.

Each “Bat Boy” has a distinct personality and storyline, although all three are known for their physical and emotional strength, complex backstories, amusing banter, and strong sense of brotherhood. Some of the “Bat Boys” are also love interests for some of the series’ protagonists, including Feyre Archeron and her sisters.

Rhysand is arguably the most important “Bat Boy” in terms of ACOTAR’s plot. He’s the High Lord of the Night Court and a powerful High Fae. He initially comes off as mysterious, arrogant, and even dangerous, but he’s hiding an emotional complexity and innate selflessness. Rhysand is also extremely powerful, wielding powers like mind-reading, shapeshifting, and the ability to manipulate shadows.

Cassian is one of the strongest and most skilled Illyrian warriors, and he serves as the General of the Night Court’s armies. He’s extremely fierce and loyal, but he also has a playful and goofy side that he uses to cheer up his troops and his loved ones. He’s a close confidante of Rhysand, as the two grew up together and became close, lifelong friends.

Azriel is the most enigmatic and mysterious of the “Bat Boys,” as he takes on the role of spymaster in the Night Court. He’s also a “shadowsinger,” which means that he has a rare and powerful ability to manipulate and merge with shadows. Although he has a bit of a broody exterior, Azriel has a deeply traumatic past, so there’s a lot of emotional complexity underneath his secretive and possessive nature.
