All About Clair Obscur: Expedition 33

Clair Obscur: Expedition 33 is a role-playing video game that takes place in a fantasy world inspired by Belle Époque France (a period of peace and prosperity in French and European history from 1871-1914). The game follows the members of Expedition 33 on their quest to destroy a villain called the Paintress.

Once a year, the Paintress paints a number on a monolith, and everyone past that age turns to smoke and vanishes. The number steadily decreases, with the last number painted being “33”. With only one year left to live, 32-year-old Gustave joins Expedition 33 in the hopes of defeating the Paintress. Here’s a list of the main characters in Clair Obscur: Expedition 33:

  • Gustave: An engineer who has devoted his life to protecting the people of Lumière and working toward a better future for them. At 32 years old, he has one year left to live, as he’ll vanish when the Paintress paints her next number.
  • Maelle: The youngest member of Expedition 33 at 16 years old, Maelle was orphaned when she was 3 years old and has difficulty trusting others. She yearns to explore the world beyond Lumière and find her destiny.
  • Lune: As the daughter of prominent researchers, Lune is passionate about finishing her parents’ work of unraveling the mystery of the Paintress, and she has a deep thirst for knowledge.
  • Sciel: A former farmer who becomes a teacher, Sciel has a warm, loving, and upbeat personality. She will fight for Expedition 33 to succeed, but she has accepted the brutality of the world she lives in, so she’s made peace with the possibility of death.
  • Monoco: As a Gestral (a group of friendly beings who view competition and battle as a form of meditation), Monoco has a scholarly personality on the outside, but a bloodthirsty spirit on the inside. Gestrals aren’t affected by the Paintress’s number, but Monoco joins the Expedition anyway for the prospect of combat.
  • Esquie: A mythical figure of children’s stories, Esquire is believed by some to be the most powerful figure in the world. Esquie was born at the dawn of time and houses untold secrets, but he’s also thought to be a bit lazy.
  • Renoir: Renoir is full of grit and determination to save his family, but he’s also hiding deep pain and fear underneath his driven exterior. He’s mainly an antagonist in the game.
  • Verso: A mysterious outsider of obscure origins who is closely tracking Expedition 33 for unknown reasons.[1]
