Fun Facts About Dexter's Laboratory

  • Dexter's Laboratory was Cartoon Network’s first original animated show. Before Cartoon Network was home to a bunch of world-changing cartoons, it was home to Hanna-Barbera’s animated shorts showcase, What a Cartoon! So when series creator Genndy Tartakovsky pitched Dexter’s Laboratory in the 90s, and it aired in 1995, it became Cartoon Network’s first original series.
  • Dexter’s been voiced by three different women. When Dexter’s Laboratory first aired, Dexter was voiced by Christine Cavanaugh, who also voiced Chuckie Finster from the Nickelodeon series Rugrats. After Cavanaugh retired from voice acting, Candi Milo took on the role for the rest of the series. Aside from those two, Dexter was voiced by Tara Strong in the video game Cartoon Network: Punch Time Explosion.
  • Seth McFarlane was a writer on Dexter’s Laboratory. Before he came up with classic adult cartoons like Family Guy and American Dad, McFarlane was a storyboard artist for Dexter’s Laboratory. He even co-wrote four episodes, which undoubtedly helped lay the groundwork for his future works.
  • There’s a banned episode that didn’t air until 2013. When the show was still in production in the late 90s, one episode titled “Rude Removal” was declared too explicit due to the excessive amount of swearing. Even though the swears were bleeped out, this was enough to keep it off the air for over a decade. Eventually, the episode was uploaded to the Adult Swim Channel on YouTube on January 22, 2013.
