Is Yellowjackets Based On a True Story?
No, the TV show Yellowjackets is not based on a true story, but it is inspired by several real-life events. Specifically, the show draws most of its inspiration from the 1972 Andes flight disaster and the 19th-century Donner Party.
The 1972 Andes flight disaster occurred when Uruguayan Air Force Flight 571 crashed in the Andes mountains. The plane was carrying a rugby team, and the surviving members were stranded in the mountains for 72 days. In order to survive after a certain period of time, the survivors agreed that they would resort to cannibalism if necessary, and they were forced to do this after rescue efforts were initially called off.
The plot of Yellowjackets similarly follows the aftermath of a plane crash that carried a high school soccer team. The survivors of the crash find themselves in the remote wilderness, where they must learn to live off the land and survive for as long as possible. SPOILER ALERT: The team does eventually resort to cannibalism, like the real-life Andes survivors, but they’re not rescued for a lengthy 19 months. The show jumps between the time of the crash (in 1996) and the survivors’ present-day lives about 25 years later.
The other true event that partially inspired Yellowjackets was the Donner Party. The Donner Party was a group of American pioneers who were traveling through the Sierra Nevada mountains in the 1840s when they became trapped by snow. The group faced extremely harsh conditions, and many members died of starvation, illness, and other natural influences. Some of the remaining people resorted to cannibalism in order to survive, with a small group of survivors being rescued after four months in the mountains.
This true story shares similarities with the Yellowjackets plot in that (AGAIN, SPOILER ALERT—DON’T READ FURTHER IF YOU HAVEN’T WATCHED THE SHOW!) the survivors ultimately cannibalize their fallen members in order to survive. However, Yellowjackets is also heavily fictionalized—some individuals are randomly sacrificed in order to provide food for the rest, and there are many supernatural elements that don’t parallel any real-life events.
So, ultimately, while Yellowjackets certainly draws inspiration from some true stories (as well as some fictional ones, like the novel Lord of the Flies by William Golding), it’s ultimately not a real account—there’s no girls’ soccer team that survived a plane crash and lived in the wilderness for almost two years.
