Ultimate Stranger Things Recap
WARNING: Spoilers ahead!
Season 1
Will Byers is abducted on his way home from his D&D group, and his mother becomes convinced he’s communicating with her and enlists the help of police chief Jim Hopper, who investigates a local, mysterious lab doing shady experiments. Meanwhile, Will’s friends look for him but instead find a young girl with psychic powers named Eleven. Eleven is able to travel to a parallel dimension called the Upside Down, which helps her locate and retrieve Will, even while pursued by a monster called the Demagorgon, but in the process, Eleven disappears.
Season 2
Other people who share Eleven’s powers and who are linked to the mysterious lab are revealed, and Will is having troublesome visions. The gang meets new-in-town Max and her older brother Billy, and we learn that Eleven is alive and hiding out with Hopper, who becomes trapped when he finds a doorway to the Upside Down, where a being called the Mind Flayer lurks. We learn that the main doorway to the Upside Down is in the lab, and Eleven and her friends face off with the Mind Flayer to save Hopper and Will, who’s in the clutches of the Mind Flayer. Still, a shadow lurks…
Season 3
Mike and Eleven are in the middle of a relationship, and everyone hangs out at the new mall. Dustin picks up some strange Russian radio signals, revealing that the Soviets are trying to open up a new doorway to the Upside Down under the mall. The Mind Flayer is collecting more victims and growing more powerful, including troublemaker Billy, and the gang confronts the monster, with Billy dying in the process. Joyce and Hopper get together before Hopper (supposedly) dies, and Mike and Eleven love each other very much.
Season 4
Everyone is scattered, with the Byers in California and Eleven grieving Hopper. A new nightmare from the Upside Down claims a victim, and the remaining gang investigates. Hopper is revealed to be imprisoned in Russia, and Eleven stands up to her bully—and is sent to juvie for doing it, but actually she’s sent back to Hawkins to help stop the big bad, Vecna, who has Max in his sights as his next victim. Eleven relives her tragic past and regains some powers. Joyce crash-lands in Russia to save Hopper, while Steve is dragged to the Upside Down via an underwater tentacle. Joyce gets trapped by Vecna, and we learn that one of the mysterious lab’s first test subjects went on a murder spree and became Vecna himself. The gang faces off with Vecna and takes some hits, but Eleven defeats him. Max is comatosed, but the battle isn’t over yet.
