The Button Nose Shape

Board-certified plastic surgeon Usha Rajagopal, MD says the button nose is small and round with an upturned tip and smooth profile. What is the button nose?

  1. Dr. Rajagopal describes the button nose as a small nose with a smooth bridge and a tip that curves slightly upward.[1] The tip is also defined by its round shape (like a button, hence the name). Button noses are neither very long nor very short, and the bridge is generally narrow. The profile is also straight with moderate projection.
    • More generally, Dr. Rajagopal says the button nose is a cute nose. The tiny tip helps it blend into the face, so it doesn’t really stand out.[2]
    • Does the button nose differ between men and women? In general, men tend to have bigger noses than women.[3] So, male button noses may appear larger and wider than female button noses.

Types of Button Noses

  1. As Dr. Rajagopal explains, the shape and size of the nose largely depend on someone’s gender and ethnicity.[4] So, people can have small, rounded, and upturned noses that don’t fit the exact, narrow mold. Some common types of button noses include:
    • Large button nose: The tip may appear larger, rounder, and slightly more bulbous.
    • Wide button nose: The bridge is wider, which can also make the tip wider and rounder.
    • Narrow button nose: The bridge is narrower, which can also make the tip smaller and more delicate.
    • Flat button nose: The tip is less curved and upturned than the “classic” button nose.

Why are button noses popular?

  1. Dr. Rajagopal notes that button noses are a current trend in the cosmetic and surgical world, especially among women. She says this nose shape is seen as cute and small, and it doesn’t stand out from the face, which is what a lot of people want.[5] In other words, button noses are seen as an attractive feature, and a lot of people want them!
    • Why are button noses considered attractive? As mentioned, they’re petite and aren’t noticeable on the face, which can help draw more attention to the eyes and lips. The delicate, sloping shape is also associated with youthfulness and friendliness, which can make people seem more approachable.
    • Because button noses are widely considered “cute,” Dr. Rajagopal says they’re not usually that popular among men.[6]

Ways to Get a Button Nose

  1. Contouring is a makeup technique that can help your nose appear smaller and thinner. As makeup artist Daniel Vann explains, applying darker makeup pushes your features backward, while applying light and bright makeup pulls them forward. So, to slim the look of your nose, he suggests applying contour (or bronzer or brown eyeshadow) along the bridge and tip of your nose.[7]
    • Here are a few quick steps to get a button nose with makeup:[8]
      • Apply a line of contour under your nose tip.
      • Apply a horizontal line of contour where your nose bridge meets your nose tip.
      • Apply a line of contour high up along either side of the bridge of your nose.
      • Apply a thin line of highlight along the bridge of your nose.
      • Apply a dot of highlight on the tip of your nose.
      • Blend out the contour and highlight.
  2. Board-certified plastic surgeon Asif Pirani, MD says fillers are a non-surgical option that can help fix small asymmetries on the nose (as such, the procedure is commonly called a non-surgical rhinoplasty).[9] Dr. Rajagopal adds that fillers are primarily used to improve the profile of the nose, as they can reduce bumps and help lift the tip of the nose.[10] Importantly, though, filler cannot make your nose smaller.[11]
  3. Dr. Pirani says rhinoplasty is the gold standard for shaping the nose. It’s a permanent, surgical procedure where a plastic surgeon reduces the cartilage and bone in the nose, which can make the profile straighter and give the tip a bit of a slope.[16] The procedure is either done under local or general anesthesia. Then, the plastic surgeon makes an incision along your nose to access the bone and cartilage.[17]

    • The Nubian nose is long and gradually tapers to a wide tip.
