Find out if Snapchat notifies people when you view their locations
PDF download Download Article

On the Snapchat Snap Map, you can see your friends' locations (depending on their privacy settings). However, you may be wondering if your friends get a notification when someone taps on their Bitmoji to check their location. In this article, we'll answer this question, along with many others, about the Snapchat Snap Map. Read on to learn more.

Can people see when you check their location on Snapchat?

Snapchat won't notify someone if you check their location. If someone posts a Snap to the Snap Map, they will see that it has been viewed, but they can't see who viewed it. If you can't see someone on the map, they might not be sharing locations with you, or they have Ghost Mode turned on.

  1. If you tap on someone's Bitmoji on the Snap Map, they won't be notified that you checked their location.[1] Tapping on their Bitmoji only lets you start a chat and see how long it's been since their location was updated.
    • If you watch someone's Snap on the Snap Map, they will see that someone has viewed their Snap, but they won't be able to see who viewed the Snap. They will simply see the number of views the Snap has.[2]

Common Questions

  1. Only friends that you've chosen to share your location with will see you on the Snap Map.[3] You can choose to share your location with all of your friends, all friends except certain ones, or only specific friends.[4]
  2. Your friend may have changed their Snap Map settings:
    • They may have chosen not to share their Snap Map location with you.
    • Your friend may have Ghost Mode on, which stops their Snap Map location from showing to everyone, including friends.
  3. To enable Ghost Mode, open the Snap Map, tap the settings button (which looks like a gear), and toggle on Ghost Mode. You can choose to enable Ghost Mode for a few hours or indefinitely.[5] Your location will still be shared with Snapchat, but no one else will be able to see it.
    • If you submit a Snap to the Snap Map, it will still show up, even if you have Ghost Mode enabled.
  4. Arrival notifications are messages that Snapchat sends to your friend(s) when you arrive at a specific location. You must set up these notifications; they won't automatically be set up for you.[6] Your device's location settings must be set to always share location with Snapchat. To set up arrival notifications, do the following:
    • Tap on your friend's profile or open your chat with them.
    • Go to the Snap Map section of their profile or tap the map icon.
    • Under "Arrival Notifications," tap Add.
    • Move the map to set which spot will trigger an arrival notification when you get there.
    • Toggle on the location you just set for an arrival notification.
    • Choose whether to notify your friend once or every time you go to that location.
    • Repeat for each friend you want to add an arrival notification for.
