How to explain the difference between Therian and Furry?
I'm just a therian, and when wearing gear or practicing quads, people make fun of me and call me a furry when I'm not. How do explain the difference? Help!

Furries like anthropomorphic animals (animals that act like humans, ex: Zootopia) and they do have fursonas (but you don't need on and not all do) that they like to dress up as. Therians experience more than just a deep connection. Therians see themselves as and identify as their theriotype. Its more than just past lives or a connection. If you feel like and animal is family to you or you identify with this animal, then you may be other hearted or animalhearted.

A lot of young Therians don’t want to be associated with furries because of the negative stigma around furries. But honestly, I think that mindset is problematic in itself.

Furries and therians are different. Being a furry is a choice, and it's a hobby you can be a part of. Therians are an actual identity. Therians involuntarily identify as a non-human animal. That's the main big difference. People usually see both therians and furries dressing up in animal costumes, so people mistake them as the same thing, which I understand. One important misconception: being a therian doesn't mean you are a spirit animal. It means you have an animal identity.

Therian is very much an identity, and it is involuntary. Nobody can choose it. There are alterhuman identities that can be chosen, like otherkin. But therianthropy itself is an involuntary animalistic identity of some earthly animal. On the flipside, being a furry is something you can choose because it is a hobby. You can choose to participate in the community, choose to call yourself a furry. Being a furry might be so important to somebody that they feel it is an identity, but it is still a choice.

hi. I would just like to add, whatever you might have seen or heard, therians do not bark at people, poop in litter boxes, and we are not zoophiles. a zoophile is someone who gets sexual attraction to animals, and zoophiles are really bad. also, therians are not delusional. we know we are physically human. the difference between therians and furries is that, a therian is someone who spiritually or mentally knows that they are an animal. they may express this through gear, quads, vocals, ect, but none of this is necessary to be a therian, because it is an identity, not a hobby. being a therian is not a choice. a furry is someone who is interested in anthromorphic animals and characters, and will cosplay as them.

I also don't understand why people hate on furries so much. We don't pee in litterboxes, we aren't attracted to animals, and NO WE DON'T THINK WE'RE ANIMALS! Treat everyone with kindness and respect. Just because they are different than you doesn't mean what they are doing is wrong. STOP FURRY AND THERIAN HATE!

Rats are a col animal, and I'm not saying that to be nice!
Here is why I think rats are cool as well!
Rats are smart; they can remember names, learn tricks and even show empathy!
Affectionate & Social; are deeply social creatures that need companions, often grooming and cuddling with their owners, if they have one.
Super Clean; Rats spend hours grooming themselves and are much cleaner than commonly believed.
And all of that is just the tip of the iceberg! There is so much to rats that makes them so fascinating!

Honestly, foxes are the best choice in my opinion;
They are clever,
they are slick,
they are fast,
and honestly a really cute animal!
Sadly you can't domesticate them like you can with dogs or cats.

Something that I see a lot of when people are told “oh, it’s just a phase”, they then feel the need to double down and dig their heels in. Instead of doing that, I’d recommend connecting with the community and just continuing to express yourself in whatever ways are authentic to you. That could be engaging in fandom activities, making fursuits, making furry art, connecting with other furries online, etc. If your family continues to push that it’s just a phase, try not to take it personally or allow it to diminish your identity, but know that a lot of folks don’t understand, and you won’t be doing yourself any favors by trying to force them to understand. It can be really hard when your family doesn't accept that you're a furry, but if you just continue being a furry long enough, they usually end up accepting it.
And in the meantime, focus on the positives of being a furry. You can make connections elsewhere that will make you feel a lot better about yourself – focus on the folks that do like that you're a furry, your friends, and the positive aspects of it. I'd recommend delving into your own furry spaces and being a furry anyway, and not worrying about what your family thinks.

I get told this a lot from my ( very religious) grandparents because I’m pan ( and nonbinary) like uh no grandpa I don’t have a bf I don’t have a gf either I don’t have a partner I’m single for a reason because you’d tell me ( if I had a male partner ) that I’m straight and lying to myself ( if I had a female partner ) being lesbian is bad ( trans, nonbinary or any other gender like Furries and Therians! ) that it’s weird

I am a furry and I hate it when they call me a literal dog. I feel you and I know how to explain the difference. Furries want to dress up as animals while therians want to act like animals since they were one in their past life. I support therians and I’m sorry people are picking on you. I believe you should be who you want to be. I know what the explanation is, but I am not personally a furry/therian. I feel like you should ignore them as well, but from experience, I know that is hard.

Not a therian, but I have a good comeback. If they start making animal noises at you to annoy you, say "Hi, furry!". Since they don't understand the difference and probably hate furries, their reaction is hilarious. hope that helps, sorry if it doesn't

You can keep it simple: explain that therian is about identity and connection to an animal on a spiritual/mental level, while furry is a fandom/hobby focused on art, characters, and suits.
You don’t need to defend yourself to everyone — just clarify it once, and if they still joke, it’s more about them than you. Stay true to what feels right for you.

The main differences: Therians (Such as myself) believe they are connected to an animal (Or believe they are one) and wear gear (Such as a mask and tail) of that animal, likely using faux fur. Furries are cosplayers of anthropomorphic animals, dogs, cats, ect. Nothing is wrong between the two, they are just a way of life.

I feel as if I’m all three, I have all canine teeth instead of normal teeth, I have that “human tail” abnormality, and whenever I howl at the moon, I sound like a wolf. Wolves sometimes howl to mourn or express their feelings. Yet I feel like I’m a wolf, I know I’m a furry, and I’ve trained myself to control the wind, to a certain extent though. But I also have body parts that only other animals have. I have venom glands, paw pads forming on my palms, etc. I’ve been called a monster so many times already…

the difference between a furry and a therian is that a therian doesn't choose to feel like an animal, like you were put into a human body and were meant to be an animal. a furry chooses to be an animal, and they look/behave like an animal (they even wear fake fur). you can also look it up if that helps more

Ofc! It's okay not to know about therians. I myself am still learning if I am really one. There are many therians everywhere, and while non-therians don't have to be like us or even care about us, it's important that they don't make fun of therians.

Furries were created long ago in which, they were sexual but it grew more innocent as time passed and as of today, you will not see sexual content from them in common cases.
The main things furries do: draw furries (Such as their Fursona), and cosplay as their Fursona as well. They commonly attend furry conventions, or a large gathering for furries.

Suuuuuper wrong buddy if u saw that on the internet those ppl are very wrong im not a furry or therian myself but i have many friends that are and most definitely do NOT feel anything sexually to animals/other furries and therians being one does NOT change your gender or sexuality ( unless u want it to be)
