Why Prayer is Important

Holy Bible Expert Olivia Woodford says, "I think prayer is the foundation for any religious practice, any relationship with the divine, and our connection to our soul, and spirit. I think it all begins with prayer."[1]

  • If you're new to praying, Woodford advises, "The first thing is to express gratitude...there's so much that we take for granted, [such as] the air that we breathe, the beauty of the flowers, the foods that we eat...all the nature around us, that supports us," so "express gratitude for that it's just given to us without us having to do anything."[2]
  • She adds, "Continually praise God because God is always answering your prayers, even if you don't like his answer, [it] might be exactly what you need to get you from here to there...[so don't] judge what you've received."[3]
  • If you're praying for something specific, Woodford says, "When you ask, the key thing is that you don't demand [something such as] 'You must get me out of the situation,' or 'You must get me a new job.'" She says prayer should be an appeal where you share what you're feeling, like "'I'm really needing help here,' [or] 'I'm really feeling out of sorts.'"[4]
