Oh, great! Another pimple—said no one ever. Acne isn’t just limited to your face and can actually pop up on other parts of your body, including your back. If you’re dealing with acne on your back, a.k.a. bacne, you may feel uncomfortable or embarrassed showing your skin. Fortunately, there are things you can do to clear up your bacne and keep it from coming back.

How to Get Rid of Pimples on Your Back

To treat bacne, beauty and skincare specialist Barbie Ritzman recommends showering after workouts, using an exfoliating body wash with salicylic acid or benzoyl peroxide, and using an oil-free moisturizer. She also suggests avoiding tight clothing, changing your bedsheets weekly, and reducing stress.

  1. A benzoyl peroxide emollient foam wash is a specially designed body wash that will unclog the pores on your back and clear out any bacteria that could potentially cause acne. Add some to your scrubbing brush when you bathe and scrub your back well with it to help control bacne and reduce flare-ups.[2]
    • You can find a benzoyl peroxide emollient foam wash at your local pharmacy or department store.
    • A few popular emollient foam wash brands include Panoxyl, GOJO, and Cetaphil.
3

Try a salicylic acid cleanser as an alternative to benzoyl peroxide.

I've been dealing with bad acne on my back for years now, and it's been making me feel self-conscious. I've tried showering and washing my back more, and I tried cutting out sugar and dairy but nothing helps. I'm starting to feel like it's just something I'm stuck with now. Is there anything at all that actually works to get rid of it?

Here are some additional tips for preventing and treating back acne that you can try:
1. Shower after sweating - Sweat and bacteria clog pores so be sure to rinse off immediately after workouts.
2. Use an exfoliating body wash - Look for salicylic acid or benzoyl peroxide to help clear breakouts.
3. Avoid tight clothing - Loose, breathable fabrics prevent sweat and oil build-up.
4. Change bedsheets regularly - Dirty sheets trap bacteria that can worsen acne so try to change your bedsheets on a weekly basis.
5. Don't pick or scrub - Picking causes scars, and harsh scrubbing irritates the skin.
6. Use an oil-free moisturizer - Heavy lotions can clog pores, so choose non-comedogenic options.
7. See a dermatologist if needed - Prescription treatments can help with persistent acne.

If you are using just over the counter products, get a wash with either benzoyl peroxide or salicylic acid, which you can buy without a prescription from a regular store pharmacy. And the other aspect that helps is getting an applicator for your back, which you can also buy inexpensively. It's like a plastic wand that has a washable sponge on it. So that's a really good way to actually get a medicated wash or medicated product onto your back. The only caveat is benzoyl peroxide bleaches colored fabrics, so you have to be a little bit careful if you leave residue on it or leave that product on.

Tips

  • Avoid wearing the same shirt for too long if you’re dealing with bacne. Your sweat and oils can accumulate and clog up your pores, making your bacne worse.

Tips from our Readers

  • When you sweat, it helps provide bacteria with a path to clog your pores. If you want to avoid acne on your back, don't do anything that makes you sweat a lot. If you do work out or play sports or something, wipe your back dry periodically.
  • I have bacne and I've found the Australian Bodycare products to be really helpful. I also really like using tea tree oil for clearing up marks or spots that seem like they could become acne.
  • I have a theory that chlorinated water helps, since my bacne tends to clear up when I go swimming in public pools. It's worth a shot! Plus, swimming is fun!
  • Try to remember, bacne is just another sign that you're human. Everybody has their little quirks and imperfections, so don't beat yourself up over it.
