What’s the normal price of a camel?

If you’re taking this quiz, you’ve probably seen the camel memes online, people discussing how many camels equal one human life and wondering how many camels they’re worth. Where did this come from? Why are we talking about it? How much is a camel worth, exactly?

Well, the idea comes from the Islamic concept of diyah, or blood money. Traditionally, diyah was monetary compensation for someone’s wrongful, accidental death. For example, if your horse accidentally trampled your neighbor, you’d owe that neighbor’s family a diyah. How you pay the diyah depends on your culture, wealth, and other factors, but one common metric was camels!

How many camels is one person worth? According to tradition, the average man was worth 100 camels, and other demographics—women, non-muslims, slaves, etc.—were worth half as much. Of course, it’s an outdated tradition that isn’t really in play today, at least not in the same way, but some cultures do still abide by the concept of a diyah, though the values of the average person have changed (and become a bit more equal). In states where diyah is still practiced, like Iran or Pakistan, the value is often set by a judge, or it’s negotiated by the families involved.
