“How Many Horses Jumped over the Fence” Riddle Explained

The person asking the riddle claps, snaps, and makes other hand motions before asking a question like, "How many horses jumped over the fence?" or "How many now?" The solution is the number of words in the question, so "How many horses jumped over the fence?" = 7 horses. The hand signs are just a distraction.

  1. When someone asks you the “How Many Horses” riddle, they’ll start by doing different hand signals, such as snapping, clapping, or tapping on something. When they’re finished, they’ll ask a question like, “How many horses jumped over the fence?” or “How many were there?”[1]
    • If you guess the wrong number, they’ll try again with even more hand motions and a follow-up question like, “How about now?”
    • Riddle expert Michael Fortner says the trick to this riddle is “use your ears, not your eyes.”[2]

Doing the “How Many Horses” Riddle for Others

  1. If the person doesn’t get the question right the first time, switch up what motions you make. If you clapped and tapped your head the first time, try snapping and hitting your fists together the second time. This works especially well if you ask questions with the same number of words.
    • Example: You could do a lot of snaps and claps and ask “How many?” for the first question, and then do a single clap and head tap and ask “That time?” The person will be confused because both answers are 2 horses.
  2. Whenever the other person makes a guess, be sure to tell them if they were right or wrong. The right answer may confuse them even more or help them solve it more quickly.
  3. Make sure that you keep track of how many words you say when you ask your question. Try to switch it up every time so it’s a little tougher for someone to figure out.
    • Do the same hand motions twice in a row, but vary the number of words to really stump the other person. You could ask, “How many horses were there?” followed by “Got it now?”
  4. There’s a chance that the person you’re trying to fool will accidentally guess the right answer. If you want to be sure that they really know the trick to solving the riddle, tell them that they have to get another one correct to win. That way, you can keep the riddle going for longer.
  5. If someone is really stuck, do a really simple hand motion. Then, say each word in your question very clearly so they can count how many there are easily. With a little enunciation, they may figure out that the words are a bigger clue than the hand motions.
