Pisces Personality Traits

PDF download Download Article
  1. Professional astrologer Angel Eyedealism says Pisces are a very fluid, compassionate sign.[2] These water signs are highly tuned into others’ emotions. Their compassion makes them natural caretakers, and because they understand the suffering of others, they’re often incredibly kind and charitable. They frequently put others’ needs before their own.
  2. Garbis says Pisces have “a rich fantasy life and are very creative… and artistic.”[3] They’re always daydreaming and expressing themselves through art, music, or writing. They’re often naturally talented in the arts and prefer living in their inner world to living in reality.
  3. Garbis adds that Pisces are also very intuitive.[4] Pisces are ruled by Neptune and Jupiter, two planets associated with psychic and intuitive abilities. They’re highly spiritual and insightful, and they often pick up on unspoken thoughts and feelings. They’re often described as the “old soul” of the zodiac.
  4. While being sensitive is sometimes a positive trait, it can also be a weakness. Pisces are highly sensitive to criticism and often misinterpret what other people say, leading to tension and conflict.[5] Because they feel so much, they also have a tendency to be moody.
  5. Pisces value emotion over logic, so making decisions can be challenging for them, especially if they’re worried their decision could hurt someone’s feelings.[6] They may feel backed into a corner and retreat into their daydreams rather than making a decision. Since their head is always in the clouds, they may also come across as distracted or unfocused. They may be forgetful, late, or neglectful at times.
  6. Because Pisces are so empathetic, they often put others’ happiness before their own. In fact, they may go out of their way to please others, even if it means sacrificing their own needs. Other people may take advantage of them because of this.[7]

Pisces Likes & Dislikes

PDF download Download Article
  1. Pisces’s element is water and their symbol is the fish, so it’s no surprise they love anything water-related. They’re most comfortable when they’re in or near water, and they enjoy all kinds of beach, river, and lake activities. Don’t be surprised if you find a Pisces swimming, sailing, surfing, fishing, or just relaxing on the shore.[8]
  2. Pisces’s ruling planet, Neptune, is sometimes associated with dance, so don’t be surprised if you find a Pisces breaking it down on the dance floor. Many Pisces also have naturally slinky bodies, which help them move gracefully.[9]
  3. Pisces are very creative and imaginative, and they’re often drawn to forms of self-expression like writing and journaling. They’re very observant and insightful, as well as lyrical and poetic, so they often have a natural talent for the written word.[10]
  4. While Pisces can be practical and logical when they need to be, they don’t really enjoy it. They often find it difficult to engage with situations that require strict focus or attention to detail. They prefer to solve problems in more creative ways.
  5. Pisces are known for their kindness and sympathetic nature, so they often dislike anything they perceive as rude. This includes harsh words, criticism, and anything offensive. Pisces may forgive rude behavior, but they don’t often forget it.[11]
  6. Pisces are dreamers who often prefer to live in their minds. Because their internal world is so fascinating, they tend to find reality dull in comparison. This is why Pisces sometimes seem detached and absent-minded; reality simply isn’t interesting enough to hold their attention.[12]

Who are Pisces most compatible with?

PDF download Download Article
  1. Consulting astrologer Donna Stellhorn says Taurus and Pisces are a “tried and true” match.[13] When a Pisces and Taurus couple up, they’ll each feel they’ve found their missing piece. A Pisces craves stability, substance, and solid ground to keep themselves on track. A Taurus desires spontaneity, softness, and sentimentality to help them break out of a dry routine. This relationship will be sweet and easy.[14]
  2. Astrologer and spiritual coach Aliza Kelly says Cancer has strong soulmate energy with Pisces.[15] Pisces and Cancer are the emotional sleuths of the zodiac. These two constantly worry about other people’s feelings with one goal in mind: becoming the ultimate shoulder to cry on. When a Pisces and Cancer get together, they’ll experience relief. Finally, someone is willing to care for them like they care for everyone else. This love affair is filled with late-night chats, lots of cuddling, and a genuine, mutual understanding.[16]
  3. A Scorpio and Pisces will give each other exactly what they want—and a bit of what they need, too. These two share a passion for emotional intensity and devotion. A Pisces and Scorpio could spend a week locked in a room with just one activity on the docket: divulging every last secret and dream between them. “Scorpio knows how to make Pisces feel secure,” astrologers Tali & Ophira Edut explain.[17] A Pisces will feel compelled to help a Scorpio find healthy perspectives. In each other, these two will find surprises, warmth, and major admiration.[18]

Who are Pisces least compatible with?

PDF download Download Article
  1. Astrologer Emily Ridout says that Gemini and Pisces are “both mutable signs, so they’re not naturally the most compatible.”[20] Gemini is the social butterfly of the zodiac and can be too fast-paced and restless for Pisces, who prefers to take life at a slower pace. However, both signs are highly creative and artistic, so they sometimes end up in flings or short-term relationships.
  2. Sagittarius is often too chaotic and aggressive for the mellow Pisces. As a fire sign, Sagittarius craves freedom and spontaneity in relationships, while Pisces seeks commitment and connection. Because Pisces is so sensitive, they may also read too much into what Sagittarius says, leading to conflict and tension.[22]
  3. While fire and water signs are both emotional, they express their emotions differently, which can lead to conflict and miscommunication. As a water sign, Pisces tends to be introspective and sensitive, while fire sign Leo is more passionate and temperamental. Leo can be especially dominant, which often causes Pisces to feel exhausted by their intensity.[23]

Pisces in Love & Sex

PDF download Download Article
  1. Eyedealism says Pisces are big romantics.[24] They often fall hard and fast. Once they feel comfortable with someone, they’re extremely devoted and want to give everything to their partner. They seek deep, emotional bonds and love grand gestures. Many Pisces believe in soulmates.
  2. When a Pisces loves someone, they truly feel their partner’s emotions. They often understand their lover’s needs before they voice them. Pisces offer emotional analyses, insightful opinions, and tons of empathy. They’re incredible emotional mirrors and healers.
  3. They turn their partners into part-time visionaries. A Pisces will be their partner’s spiritual cheerleader—encouraging artistic projects, rich emotional exchanges, and a childlike imagination. Dating a Pisces is often a magical, transformative experience.
  4. Pisces are existential crisis magnets, so love can be tough. Emotional ups and downs can define a Pisces’s relationship if they’re not careful. Though not mean-spirited or aggressive, a Pisces definitely gets moody. With little warning, they may become distant or reclusive. This can stress out high-strung people, but with patience and time, a Pisces’s partner will learn to navigate the ups and downs.
  5. A Pisces wants to bring their partner’s wildest fantasies to life. They’re nonjudgmental, imaginative, and extremely generous people. Anyone lucky enough to get between the sheets with a Pisces can expect the role-playing of their dreams.[25]

Attracting a Pisces

PDF download Download Article
  1. A Pisces' life is colored by emotional discovery and truth. A Pisces won’t feel connected if you’re closed off, and if you find heartfelt expressions silly, then they’ll find you silly. To draw a Pisces in, discuss the big stuff: childhood fears, complex feelings, artistic dreams, and the wonders of life.
    • Reader Poll: We asked 895 wikiHow readers what their biggest dealbreaker is as a Pisces and 62% of them said someone who lies. [Take Poll] Pisces value honesty, so be upfront with your feelings!
  2. Pisces are the ultimate free spirits, and that’s the way they like it. But in love, a Pisces craves dependability—someone who can bring balance into their life. For these sensitive souls, the world can be a tough place. To attract a Pisces, make them feel protected and secure: be their emotional rock, fix things when they break, and organize the plans.
    • The Eduts say, with Pisces, “It’s all about the little things, a constant stream of little things to reassure them and make them feel like they’re seen and appreciated.”[26]
  3. Eyedealism says Pisces look for partners who are “sensitive, colorful, musical, [or] artistic in some way.”[27] Don’t be afraid to let your unique talents and interests shine through. A Pisces will be drawn to someone who is in touch with their imagination.
  4. Pisces are devoted partners, but they won’t be in any hurry. This sign is sensitive to structure and responsibility, so they may be slow to agree to exclusivity. Trust that they’ll get there in their own time.[28] Don’t pressure a Pisces, understand their reservations, and if you get impatient, avoid lashing out. Pisces in Friendship & Family

  1. Pisces are gentle, caring, and always willing to listen. However, they also tend to get confused, lost, be late, or change plans at the last minute. They need friends who understand their boundaries, have patience, and can help them preserve their energy.[29]
  2. Pisces often prioritize emotional connection and harmony above all else. They’re also deeply intuitive caregivers who often sacrifice their own needs to support loved ones. Because they’re conflict-averse, they dislike fighting and may struggle with discipline or high-conflict situations.[30]

Pisces in Career & Money

PDF download Download Article
  1. They’re too imaginative for practical careers like a 9-to-5. They have a strong work ethic, but only if they believe the work is important. Pisces do well in artistic and creative jobs that allow them to think, daydream, and work flexible hours. They often enjoy working alone, where they’re free to think and create as they please.[31]
    • Best careers for Pisces: Musician, artist, writer, photographer, spiritual counselor, social worker, filmmaker, animator
    • Challenging careers for Pisces: Military, lawyer, salesperson, job recruiter, manager/supervisor
  2. Pisces usually don’t care how much they earn as long as they’re following their dreams and doing work they believe is important. They often gain (and lose) money easily, and they can be a bit careless with their finances. However, Pisces are also resourceful and can recognize their financial weaknesses, so they often hire someone to help with their finances so that they can focus on things that are more important to them.[32]

How Do You Communicate With a Pisces In a Relationship?

I'm a Pisces sun woman and while I've always felt like this sign matches me in a lot of ways I also feel sometimes like the personality of a stereotypical Pisces doesn't always align with my personality. So I'm wondering: what is the personality of a Pisces? If you are a Pisces sun, do you feel like you fit this sign and the stereotypes that go with it?

Pisces is a very fluid sign, it's a very compassionate sign, it's a very sensitive sign. They can be a little on the shy side as well and are very sensitive to their environment. They love music and art and colors.

Water signs, in general, tend to attach more to others, but Pisces are the ghost signs, the sign that can ghost better than any other sign. They literally can disappear right in front of you. Pisces is a very subtle sign, but also a very extreme sign in some ways, because they are the sign of duality.

Pisces can be flirty, flighty, and a little…distracted. The internal world of a Pisces is rooted in imagination, so the version of reality they’re experiencing tends to be more fanciful. This can lead to a perception of impermanence; those with less patience may go so far as to say “flaky”.

In reality, I find Pisces to be highly emotionally driven: if they can’t feel it, it ain’t real! Speaking their language means knowing the nuance of their emotional process.

Tips from our Readers

  • As a Pisces I can get so emotionally overwhelmed that I get bogged down by negative thinking or all the sorrow in the world. To shake myself out of it I've had to develop coping mechanisms to make it easier to get back to reality. I have a lot of earth sign friends who ground me and remind me that my emotions aren't always rooted in reality and that I don't have to punish myself. I exercise, make art, spend time in nature, and sing a lot to make myself feel whole and happy, too.
  • I'm a triple Pisces and I'm the one in my friend group everyone comes to for advice, I try hard not to be judgmental and to just listen and I find it comes naturally to me. I've heard Pisces aren't compatible with air signs but I don't think this is true, or it isn't for me anyway.
