Do you want to add a link to a website or skip to a specific slide in your PowerPoint presentation? This can be done easily using hyperlinks. You can create this command for text or certain objects, like an arrow. Whether you're using the web, desktop, or mobile version, here's how to put a hyperlink in a Microsoft Office PowerPoint on Windows, Mac, iOS, and Android.
Steps
-
Add the text or object you want to use as a hyperlink and select it. You can use text such as "click here", a website name, or something else. You can also use a shape or a picture.[1]
- To create a shape, click the Insert tab and select Shapes. Select the shape you want, and then click + drag your cursor to create it. If you want the shape to stay proportioned, hold Shift while doing so.
- To add a picture, click the Insert tab and select Pictures. Select where you want to upload from, and then select the picture.
- Use this method to create a clickable link that redirects the viewer to a web page, file, or another slide.
-
Click the Insert tab. This is at the top of the page.Advertisement
-
Click Link, and then Insert Link. This will open more options.
- On Mac, you'll only need to click Link.
-
Click Existing File or Web Page or Place in This Document. A new window will open where you can enter your hyperlink information.
- Select Existing File or Web Page to link to a website. Select Place in This Document to link to another slide.
- On Mac, this is Web Page or File or This Document > Select a place in this document.
- On PowerPoint Web, this is Webpage or file or This Presentation.
-
Enter your hyperlink information. This will vary slightly depending on where you want to link to.
- To link to a website, insert the URL in the Address field and edit the Text to display/Display text if necessary. You can also add a ScreenTip if you want to show specific text when the cursor hovers over it.
- To link to a new slide, select the slide you want to link to.
-
Click OK, and then Insert. The hyperlink will be created and attached to the text or object you selected. Now, when you click this text or object, you'll be redirected.
-
Create an Action Button (optional). If your hyperlink takes you to a specific slide in your presentation, you can create an Action Button that returns you to the previous slide or another location. This is helpful if you don't want to manually flip through your existing slides to find the correct one. This differs from a regular hyperlink because you can add sounds if you want.[2] Do the following:
- Click the Insert tab and select Shapes.
- Select an object under Action Buttons.
- Click and drag on the slide to create the shape.
- In the Action window, select Hyperlink to.
- Click the drop-down menu and select Last slide or another slide.
- Click OK.
-
Tap where you want to put the hyperlink. On the Microsoft PowerPoint app for iOS and Android, you can only add a hyperlink with a URL. If you want more customization features, be sure to use PowerPoint on a computer or on the website.[3]
-
Tap Insert and select Link. You may need to tap the edit icon to pull up the menu.
-
Tap Insert Link. If you opened a web address or file recently, you can quickly add it by tapping it underneath the Recent Items header.
-
Enter the URL. This goes into the Address field.
- If you want to change the text that displays, enter it in the Text to display box.
-
Tap Done or Insert. This will add the hyperlink to your PowerPoint slide.

QuestionIf I change the hyperlink's text color, how do I change it back to the default?
FreyrTop AnswererThe "Clear all formatting" tool should fix it. Just highlight the link and press the "A" with an eraser over it. You could also try using the format paintbrush from normal text. Otherwise you can just copy and paste the link into a browser, then copy it back across to the PowerPoint.
