Alternative Methods

  1. If you’d rather not use the Teams recording tool, or if you don’t have access to it, you can record the meeting with your device’s screen capture tool. The right way to do this depends on what kind of device or operating system you’re using. Unfortunately, Mac doesn’t have a built-in option to easily record your screen with audio, and the iOS screen recording app may not support audio from Teams.
  2. 2
Use a third-party screen recording app. If your device’s built-in screen recorder doesn’t work, there are other options that might. Try some of these apps to capture your Teams meeting with audio:
    • OBS Studio is a free screen recording app for Windows, Mac, and Linux. Check out our article to learn the basics of recording your screen with OBS.
    • For the mobile version of Teams, try a screen recorder app like Screen Recorder Voice & Video (iPhone) or XRecorder (Android).

FAQ

  1. 1
Who can start or stop a recording in Teams? You don’t have to be the creator of a meeting to start or stop a recording. Any meeting participant with a Microsoft 365 subscription can record (or stop recording) a meeting.[2]
    • If you’re using an organizational account, only participants who belong to the same organization can start or stop the recording.[3]
    • You won’t be able to start or stop recording an organizational meeting if the IT administrator doesn’t have recording enabled.
    • If you have a Teams Premium account, you can limit recording privileges to meeting organizers, co-organizers, and presenters (or just organizers and co-organizers).
  2. 2
Why can’t I find the option to record a meeting? This probably has something to do with your type of Teams account or your organization’s account settings. You may not be able to record a meeting if:
    • You don’t have a Microsoft 365 subscription.[4]
    • You’re in an organizational meeting where recording is not enabled.[5]
    • You’re in an organizational meeting, but you’re not part of the same organization.
    • The meeting organizer has a Premium license and has restricted who can start or stop a recording.
  3. 3
Can I record the meeting without others knowing? You can only do this if you use a third-party screen recording tool (or your device’s built-in screen recorder) rather than the Teams recording tool. Before trying to secretly record a meeting, find out whether you can legally record others without their consent in your area.
  4. 4
Where can I find the recording? Teams recordings will appear in the meeting chat, where they are available to view or download for the next 30 days. They’ll also be saved to your OneDrive account, in the Recordings folder. It may take some time for the recording to appear on OneDrive.[6]
    • If you’re using an organizational account, the recordings will be saved in OneDrive for work and school or Sharepoint.[7]
  5. 5
How do I delete recordings? Recordings are automatically deleted after 30 days, but you can delete them sooner if you like. Find the recording in the meeting chat, click or tap •••, and select Delete.[8]
