What are SCPs?
SCPs are fictional “anomalies” that are part of a writing project called the SCP Wiki. Within the world of this writing project, the SCP Foundation is a top-secret government organization tasked with capturing and documenting “anomalies,” which are essentially unexplained paranormal or supernatural phenomena. The foundation’s motto is “Secure, Contain, Protect.”[1]
The SCP Wiki is a collaborative project, meaning users can write and share their own “SCP files” to participate in creating the fictional universe. These files are written to appear like classified reports about various spooky anomalies, and the writing style is heavily influenced by the genres of science fiction, horror, and “creepypasta” stories.[2]
SCPs are split into classes, with the three main ones being Safe, Euclid, Keter, and Thaumiel. Here’s a breakdown:
- Safe: SCPs that are contained easily and safely, due to the fact that the SCP Foundation has already studied them extensively.
- Euclid: SCPs that require more resources to contain, or that cannot be contained as reliably because there hasn’t been enough research on them, or because they are inherently unpredictable.
- Keter: SCPs that are exceedingly difficult to contain reliably, often because there is insufficient research on them, or due to a lack of available technology to contain them. These anomalies often require extensive and complicated containment procedures.
- Thaumiel: SCPs that are used to contain other SCPs.[3]
